    How to preserve cape?

I shot a mule deer yesterday and want to mount it but we won’t head back to Texas until Friday at the earliest. Is there any way to keep the cape good for that long?

Roll it up, place it in a bag, and put it in the cooler. Just keep it from getting wet

Keep it as dry as possible and if possible pack it in dry ice. Depending where you are, there may be a locker in town thatll take it until you leave.

Very easy to do. The easiest would be to get it frozen or dang near that but if you can’t:

        A) a 1lb 10oz container of iodized salt from the grocery store, dump entire thing on inside of hide and fold flesh to flesh and keep in cool shaded spot or opened up hair down flesh up in the shade allowing air flow DO NOT ALLOW IT TO GET WET

        B) no chance of getting salt or cold, start fleshing yourself. You’ll need to cut off all chunks of meat and fat, as well as skinning the head. The eyes, lips, nose will need to be turned. If you don’t know how to do that don’t just trim off fat and leave as much non fatty and meaty tissue as possible and salt those areas. Keep dry, adequate airflow, and shaded

In our backcountry camps we’ve kept probably 25-30 elk/deer for the wall just skinned with the skull and antlers still attached for over a week with no issues as long as it stays cool and keep shaded.

Also Google is your friend. All types of info on preserving the hide and also how to cape the hide off of the head.

If you do not know how to properly turn, flesh and salt it and cannot get it froze then keeping it dry and completely burying it in ice is your best chance... It should be fine but with that many days on ice there will be no guarantees that it will make it through the tanning process..

Well I got 6lbs I’d dry ice and Wrapped it up stuck it in the cape, then I balled it up and put in trash bag. Had a lick tub that I am packing with ice around the head hopefully that works

If you choose to bag and ice, don’t roll it up, just lay it in the bag. Rolling will insulate the inside of the roll and it can spoil.
Remove as much flesh and fat as possible.

I wouldn't put the dry ice directly on the hide either. Might burn it.

Dry ice in the cape could cause damage. I’d divide the ice from the cape with a piece of cardboard or something
