Solar activity actually has a big effect on our weather here. We live on a huge magnet, and the sun is spewing super charged ions. High solar activity also corresponds with an increase in earthquake activity as well.

While we can’t do anything to stop it, we can be prepared for the effects it can have on us. Most of that preparation also helps with other things we see like power outages and hurricanes.

That same sun spot just sent out the strongest solar flare in years. An X9.1. The effects of this flare should be seen on October 6th, which should hit after the CME from the 7.1 hits us, on or about October 5th.

So, depending on the strength of the CME from the latest flare, we might see the northern lights deeper into Texas again.

Because very few people go there due to all of the politics that they are trying to avoid.

Thats why there are current events for post like these..

Well, there have now been another couple of small X class solar flares that have occurred over the last couple of days. These most recent flares have sent out a more significant CME than what the previous strong flares did. Combine that with our magnetic field still reeling from the last geo magnetic storm and we are now under another geo magnetic storm watch. This time, the northern lights should dip a little farther south into Texas than what they did a few days ago. NOAA forecasts the storm watch for October 10-11.

I still don’t foresee any problems with the grid, but if the weather remains clear, we might be in for a good show!

I put solar flares and tornados in the same category, wake me up after they hit. 😏

and if you go outside right now, look to the north, and you will see a reddish/pinkish faint glow that changes in intensity. That is the northern lights folks!! If you live close to or in the city, you probably won’t see them. I live southeast of San Antonio and can see them now.

A new sun spot is starting to rotate to face us. This new sun spot has already sent out an X3 and an X1 flare. These were not facing earth so their CMEs will only give a glancing blow to us. Over the next few days it will be something I will be monitoring.

We have seen the northern lights here in south Texas twice this year. Could we see them again? It is possible.

I had an EMP/Surge suppressor put in the box at the farm. Although it is designed to protect against both I have reservations if its fast enough for an EMP.

                            I do agree 100%.

What most don’t know is that an EMP and a massive solar flare can both do EXTREME damage to our electrical grid, they do so in different ways. A massive solar flare can induce large electrical currents in the ground and in long wires that act as an antenna for the energy. Our power lines are a pretty good antenna for that energy. The amperage is slow to increase, rising in minutes, so it is not difficult for consumers to protect our equipment from a massive solar flare. The amperage messes with power grids and can cause fluctuations which can cause permanent damage to equipment. As consumers, all we need to do is to unplug electronics from the wall to protect from a massive solar flare. The bedrock under your feet also has an impact on the effect of a massive solar flare. Here in south and south/east Texas, we are pretty safe except from the strongest of flares.

An EMP works on a MUCH higher frequency so it does not need an antenna to impact electronics. This is why a faraday cage is necessary to protect electronics from an EMP. Even if electronics are unplugged, they can still be damaged from an EMP. An EMP damages electronics from a MASSIVE voltage spike that takes nanoseconds to have an effect. So in less than 1 second, all of the damage is done. It is the speed at which this happens that makes me skeptical if any box is going to protect things in the event of an EMP. The good news here though is the further away you are from the epicenter of an EMP, the lesser the damage. If you are far enough away from an EMP, you might only experience minor problems that just require a reboot to get electronics working again. This includes vehicles. So, I keep a 10mm wrench in my car and truck just in case so I can disconnect the battery, then reconnect it to reboot things…… just in case.

Now, I’m not an expert on these. I’ve read a few papers and done research into this arena so the exact details may be slightly off, but the premise remains.
