Please explain why one is better than the other. They're both 11 second cycle times.

between the two, it looks like the Champion one wins if you look at features vs. price. My only hangup would be Champion engine vs. the well-known Kohler name.
I have no experience with the Champion one, but my stepdad has gotten several years of trouble-free use so far out of the tractor supply model.
This is a tough one.

I've split a lot of wood with a County Line just like the one linked, it will split just about anything you can set/balance on it, once split it falls off the splitter. We made some side pieces for it and it works a lot better now. They do make side guards for it but the champion comes with them and holds the split pieces after. We run non ethanol gas in the one we use and it starts every year when splitting season hits.
Edit: we hardly ever use it vertically, as its usually hooked to a utv/wheeler and we drag it around and split as we cut. It will split fresh cut green wood with ease. We cut for 2 years in advance so most of the wood split is green wood.Last edited by KDinTX; 10-27-2021, 08:38 AM.

Anyone know when Tractor Supply puts their splitters on sale? I just know in 2019 these splitters cost half as much as they do now.

but contrary to the above I never use mine in horizontal. For me it seems to be more work to have to pick all the wood up to set it in the cradle. but no biggy and your mileage may vary.
I say get the one you like

On the County Line one.. Is there a way to change how far back the splitter goes? Watching videos it retracts all the way (the full 24") If I'm splitting 12" logs it would be great if it would stop a little more than half way back. I know you can manually make it go forward and back at any point but while removing split logs it looks to go too far.

I was going to get the Northern tool splitter with the Honda engine until I watched videos of both... I got the 30 ton County Line unit. It has a 10 second cycle time... 40% faster than the Northern tool... I do not do business with Home Depot. I've split post oak, live oak and hickory rounds that I could barely roll with mine and it pushes through them with no problem... even rounds that have big knots in them... If you've ever split green live oak, you know how gummy that stuff is... the county line unit splits it just fine. The one mod I did to mine was to add a shut off valve in the fuel line between the tank and engine. The on/off switch that comes on the unit shuts off the gas and spark at the same time. I wanted to be able to run the fuel out of the carb when I'm done. It was an easy 10 min. mod... I'd buy this unit again.
Oh and I use it both horizontally and vertically... The big rounds I split vertically. I have 3 Tractor Supply stores within 10-15 miles of my house... the closest HD or Northern tool is 30+ miles away... That was a big factor too...

Tim, the auto return is just a spring loaded position on the return valve function. You can bump it to stop it. Also you can put a stop behind the ram too if you want. There are some videos on you tube on how to do that, but you can just cut yourself a piece of wood that will fit between the back of the ram and the big posts that push wood that may be stuck on the ram. The reverse stroke is stopped by tripping the relief valve if you don't bump the handle and stop it.
When I'm using mine, I just bump the handle to stop mine... It's easy and convenient for me to do that.
