Our goal every year is to take a management buck or 2 if we can, however that doesn't always work out. No paying hunter this year opened up the property for us and numbers were down somewhat after the big snow last spring.
We did see quite a few doe/fawn groups , fawn recruitment looks promising if winter cooperates.

                          Some pics from the hunt.

Mature bucks were pretty scarce, lots of 1 1/2 yr and 2 1/2 yr olds with the doe groups.

After a day or so hunting the home place we hit the west pasture looking for elk and spotted some from the highway. Made a long stalk up and over 2 hog back ridges only to find tracks and scat, no elk.
Dejected we headed back to the ranch house side for last light hunt for deer and luckily spotted my nice buck from the highway also. Very short stalk and he was down. ATV was able to get right to the kill site. One buck will fit on the front rack with the right bungees thankfully.

We went out next morning back to the west side looking for the elk herd, could not find them at all but a deer carcass on the state section next to where we last saw them told us they moved out after that deer was taken. We glassed several spots and no sightings so back to the home place for deer.

Last morning brought cold and more bucks, just small ones. Things were looking up for the spouse then winter moved in with fog and snow. Glassing was impossible so we packed up and headed home.

Unfortunately my excitement on spotting the buck lead to me taking what we think is only a 3 1/2 yr old buck. Nice buck but he could have used another year or 2, lol. We'll look at the teeth and see if they need to be lab aged by WG&F

We covered the west end pretty well looking for elk, no dice this trip. Cow tags are good until end of Dec. so still some hope.

Every morning and evening anywhere from 9-20 doe/fawns were in the yard feeding, lots of small bucks with them.

We also wanted to take a few coyotes, I though at least , but spouse was hesitant due to the deer scarcity. I finally made hi take one after seeing 4 one morning. Nice loper but the 300wsm did a job on the hide, not salvageable.

Spouse did catch 2 rats in the garage, YEAH!!! Rat traps are deadly . He saves the rats for trapping bait, in the freezer they go.

This is mainly open country hunting so glassing is the key, spotting scope and binos got lots of work. Thanks to Swaro for making great products.

We'll be back up for Thanksgiving week, if not sooner, to set some traps and look for a cow elk. Hoping spouse's work schedule allows us to trap like last year, lots of days and some nice bobcats and coyotes.
