With TX whitetail opening this weekend, just thought I'd pass along how I cape out deer to save you some frustration & extra $ when you drop off at your taxidermist.
Before we get started, take it easy on the Crown Royal until you're done. I know you're excited but it's not worth a trip to the ER or a butchered deer cape.
First, ring around the front knees. Then cut up the back of the leg, right on the grey/white transition line, to the arm pit. ***DO NOT CUT ON THE INSIDE OF THE LEGS ACROSS THE CHEST*** Cut off the bottom of the leg below the knee with the hoof. Go ahead & skin the cape off the front shoulders so when you bring the whole cape down later it'll slide right over the front legs to the neck.
Second, you have a couple options here. I cape the whole deer starting at the hind quarters. You have to skin the whole deer anyway & your taxidermist will never be angry you brought too much hide. Or you can ring around the deer's mid section BEHIND the ribcage. This is a good option with larger animals (elk, stag, oryx, etc) or if you're strapped for space. There are endless mold options these days, don't limit yourself by cutting the cape short or force yourself into buying a replacement cape.
Lastly, whether gutting the deer or just skinning down the stomach, DO NOT cut past the sternum. The chest portion of the cape is a very important part on your mount and your taxidermist doesn't need sewing practice. "Sock" the rest of the deer out. You'll be thankful for the first step now as it's a breeze moving up to the neck. Continue socking up the neck to the base of the skull & cut through the neck bone. You will have the deer skull with cape attached.
Now get it cold & dry. Cold is more important than dry. Freeze it immediately if possible and take it to your taxidermist ASAP. Don't ride around with it in the back of your truck for 4 days.
If you decide to use Big Racks Taxidermy , we are available 7 days a week for drop offs. Just give Christie a call to schedule an appointment 281-779-9690.
If you book a hunt with Daily Limit Guide Services LLC. , you can enjoy adult beverages during this process while myself or another guide handles this for you.
