FYI - don’t go shopping for fresh lump crab meat. Current prices are $40 a pound

according to the LDWF, oyster season is currently CLOSED in Louisiana and nearly ALL harvest areas will NOT be open this year. Mother nature is to blame. Appears Calcasieu Lake will be the only area for harvest and that begins on Nov. 1, 2021.

LDWF manages approximately 1.7 million acres of public oyster areas in Louisiana. Every July, LDWF takes a census of the oysters found on public areas. Biologists collect and record data from hundreds of oyster samples across Louisiana’s coast. They use these data to estimate the oyster stock size and recommend when the annual season for public oyster areas should be. This season typically runs from the first Wednesday following Labor Day in September through April 30 of the following year. However, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission can open and close the season when biological data indicate a need.

Public Oyster Area ............................. Season ........... Limit
          - East of MS River, North of MRGO ............No Season
          - East of MS River, South of MRGO .............No Season
          - Sister Lake- Bedding ......................Opens October 25, 2021
(One day only) No more than 15% of non-living material allowed in bedding loads.
          - Sister Lake- Sacking ................Opens October 26, 2021
          (Closes October 29, 2021) 3-days only , 25 sacks/vessel/day (take and possession)
          - Lake Tambour, Lake Chien, Lake Felicity, Deep Lake, Lake Mechant, Bay Junop, Barataria, Little Lake ... No Season
          - Hackberry Lake .................................. No Season
          - Vermilion/Atchafalaya Basin .................. No Season
          - Calcasieu Lake
(East side and West Cove) Opens November 1, 2021 10 sacks/vessel/day
(take and possession) ...... No scrapers: Tong or hand only

Sadly it looks like very few oysters from LA this year, as the harvest will likely be sold to restaurants. Private oyster farmers will be very busy but prices will be at a premium

1 week before the season was scheduled to open, this happened

Alaska has oysters… I grew up on the Texas coast and have had oysters from there all the way to Apalachicola FL. The ones up here are smaller but are so much better. I am in Seldovia right now and they are being farmed in the bay next door.

Bought 4 dozen gulf and 6 dozen blue points yesterday at Fresh along with some dry scallops for momma and boiled up a couple pounds of shrimp with french bread! Made the gulf oysters into chargrilled and ate the others raw! 3 of us destroyed 4 dozen char grilled in about 2 minutes! Man I love chargrilled oysters! I gotta find a way back to the coast this fall so I can get some more fresh shucked oysters! Probably do a gallon next time instead of a quart!

Get a gallon or 2 next time your at the coast. Oysters freeze better than most seafood without compromising quality. Freeze in sip locks with plenty of water

Off bottom farming makes a big difference in oyster taste and quality. It has recently been legalized in Texas and should be on the market soon.
