    Trailer Hub overheating

I have a tandem trailer and the far back driver’s side hub/wheel and disc brake is overheating. It’s a brand new hub/bearings, full of grease. All the other hubs were not hot. After I noticed it overheated I let it cool down, I tightened then back the castle nut off just incase it was overtightened. Drove it again and it overheated. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but when it’s jacked up I can spin the wheel by hand I can’t spin the wheel on the opposite side but that one is not overheating. Any thoughts on what else to check?

Could be bad bearings or something outa round not letting bearings roll as they should.Or the break not releasing all the way but that one not spinning by hand just ain’t right either.

        Bearing turning freely??

Will backing off the crown nut allow the wheel to spin free? If run too long overheated the bearings may already have flat spots, creating drag (friction) causing more heat.
If the wheel isn't spinning free when off the ground, something's not right.

I’m going to check out the brakes tomorrow. I’m tempted to just remove them. I’m under the 4500lb rule/law. Has anyone removed them and noticed any difference.

If the brakes are the problem, I would fix them. When you need to stop in a hurry, every little bit helps.

Check your plug. Especially if you are using an adapter. I had one lock my trailer brakes when the brakes weren’t applied.

How do you check the plug? Did you hook up the trailer, jack the wheels up and see if they spun with or w/o applying the brakes?

I believe if it was the pin both wheels would be locked. Earlier you said one wheel wouldn't spin but the other would. I would suggest like other stuck brake pad.

That will work. But it can also be intermittent with a short. I usually replace the plug. If possible don’t use one made in China and definitely don’t use an adapter made in China.

If the brakes are electric, disconnect the power supply and go for a drive. If still overheating then it’s a bearing issue.

Good trouble shooting right there. You are gonna know brake system or bearing real quick.

It is good trouble shooting…unfortunately they are hydraulic….but, I maybe able to remove the pads and if there is enough gap, ride around and see what happens and diagnose from there.

How are you determining that its overheating? A brake drum will get pretty hot. Do you have surge brakes or electric over hydraulic?
