Had a very similar experience with a previous neighbor of our lease. He did have mental issues. Was a known hothead, and had multiple encounters with LE for bar fights, etc... Thing is, his family is fairly connected in the town, so it rarely came to anything. 1 time you saw him, he was super nice, talking about the hunting, offering up the pond on his property for duck hunting, etc... The next day he would come speeding into our camp shouting, hollering, etc... about who knows what saying it is our fault for everything. 1 point he pulled a firearm on my father during a confrontation on our property. It was witnessed by many. My dad went and filed a report with the Sheriff's Office. He asked the guy's family if he should press charges, giving them the opportunity to bail him out. They all said to press charges as they were sick and tired of it all. He ended up passing of cancer during the process, so nothing came of it legally. One needs to keep in the back of their minds that not everyone is stable, and you have no idea what will set people off. I am not saying to always walk on eggshells, but just be prepared is all. You never know.
It's definitely NOT the right thing to do....BUT...
The overwhelming thought that keeps coming back to me as I read all these replies, is that the first chance someone got to beat this sumbitch to a bloody mess, would do all the world some good. I mean make sure he can't get to his pistol, then break a few ribs, loosen some teeth, and make it real hard to see for a few weeks with an axe handle or some such. Make him remember it all in his knees for a while, and I bet he'd gentle right down. I knew a truck driver as a kid that acted like this all the time, he'd probly be considered bi-polar now, but he was just considered an ******* back then, and some ol boys took it upon themselves to work him over with boots and 2X4s on a jobsite one day, and it did him a world of good for the rest of his life. Super nice guy who came around with his hat in his hand.
This kind of thing could get you put in jail, as well...but probly not for long.

Its quite unfortunate that this is frowned upon nowadays...

Yep Dale, back when I was a kid growing up, I was big for my age (6' and 200# in the 6th grade)... I was a gentle kid and some of the older guys and punks would pick on me n try to get me riled up because I was a big soft kid... My mom went to school once and talked to the principal about it, and that really embarrassed me, so it got worse... My dad told me, "Son, if you will just beat their asses just right, they'll run from you the next time they see you..." I finally tried it his way, and you know what, IT WORKED!! There were 5 of them and they jumped my one day on my way home from school... Beat me up pretty good... I told my mom, "don't you dare go back to the school again! I'll handle it..." Well I caught each one of them out on their own and "handled" it... I beat the snot out of every single one of those guys n the word got out... I never got into trouble and I never had an issue with bullies again in school... Now a days, they'd put you in jail or put you in some kind of alternative learning school... Some things are just best handled one on one...

Sounds like me. I was only 5'8" in 6th grade but I grew rapidly once I hit HS.
Same thing. Picked on because my mother was telling me not to fight back.
One day she saw what was going on and said "next time, beat the **** out of them", which was surprising because she never cursed.
A few tried after that but after seeing a few of their buddies thrown around like rag dolls or laid out, it stopped except for a couple of crazy ones. And never on school grounds.
If it wasn’t that was darn close to a terroristic threat on his part. And yes, had he grabbed his pistol he would have been taking the room temperature challenge. He was extremely fortunate that you were cool headed. He’s one sandwich shy of a picnic. Refund his money and boot him off. With the deputy there.

Yep. There are typically 2 types of people that act this way.
1. Guys that are all mouth and bluffing because nobody has ever called their bluff. They run their mouth because nobody has bounced their heads off the ground yet.
2. True bullies that are dangerous and can actually back up their mouths.
Most are Type #1 and just need dental work with a Bat to adjust their attitude.
