Looking for a site to check out info on putting a food plot(s) here at the ranch in the Cedar Creek area.
I assume I start with a soil test and go from there.
I have a small food plot. Soil tests are a good start. You should add lime several months in advance if the test calls for it. It will tell you which fertilizer to use so that will help. I can tell you this from experience cause I’ve tried almost everything. Imperial whitetail clover (NOT the cheap clover, throw and grow, rye grass, etc) and forage oats. Those 2 seeds and triple 13 fertilizer. plant the middle to late September.
If you get some rain you’ll have greenery within a couple of weeks and by November you’ll be on point.
I plant a cornfield turn tow totalling about 1 acre. I plant oats, clover and a little alfalfa. I like the oats as they come up first, grow fast and are ready to eat with days of breaking through. In my area the clover is a little later before it really kicks off. When the clover is really popping the oats are to a point where they're a little tuff and the deer are usually done unless I mow.
The landowner bails it in the spring so I feel like I'm giving back to him just a little.
