    Islamorada or KeyWest

Looking like we’re going to punt on Cancun in October for our 25th anniversary. Recommendations for places in South Florida? I don’t really want to do “touristy” places like Destin, etc.

Basically looking for place to have some drinks and relax.

    Whatcha got?

I like Key West a lot. Just make sure you don’t go when they are having a “special” festival. If you want to fish book now!

When we went to Key West, we stopped and spent the night in Islamorda at the Conch Inn. https://www.facebook.com/ConchOnInnMotel

Sorry, looks like they are no longer in business.

If you don’t want touristy avoid Key West. Been going to the Keys since the late 80s that I can remember, much earlier as a baby/toddler, and there is really nothing I like about Key West. Had to pick my wife up at the airport there a few years ago and we drove around. Worst mean of the trip, at a popular place in the marina, and could not get headed back up the Keys fast enough.

I prefer the middle keys, but it is dang nice all along the way. There are some nice places up in Islamorada. I like Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key. Close to a lot of amazing places to eat in Marathon.

Just my opinion but I have spent a fair amount of time down there.

Funny you should mention the “special” part of Key West. I remember being a 15 year old kid with my grandparents in Key West sitting down to eat on an outdoor patio.

That was absolutely the first time I had ever seen a couple like that and my grandfathers reply to my “what is wrong with them” question was priceless. My grandmother scolded him for that response and I was traumatized by the whole dang show. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Key west didn’t impress me. But if your looking to just relax it may actually be right up your alley if there’s not a festival weekend. Plenty of relaxed bars on Duval.

                Not a key west fan.

We truly enjoyed Duck Key, hawks cay resort. We just chilled at the resort.

We also stayed in key largo at a real cool resort but I cannot remember the name.

If y’all decide key west and want to go to the dry tortugas make sure you book the seaplane well in advance.

Wife and I are headed to Key West Sept 18th for 5 days. Plan to do a lot of fishing, eating and drinking. We're not big beach goers so not worried about beach access, etc. Booking fishing now. I will let you know how it goes. We have VRBO booked, private pool and hot tub, walking distance to pretty much everything. Might rent a car and go north one day. Really no plans, just to be NOT HERE and in a free state.

I just got back from a week in Duck Key at Hawks Cay Resort. Highly recommend it. Relaxing place with 2 pools, one for everyone and one for adults only. Angler and Ale is in the resort and right down the road and has good views and nice drinks. Its about a 20 minute drive or so up to Islamorada but we went to Lorelei Restaurant one night. Awesome sunset views and some amazing food. Get there early though cause it fills up quick. Sparky's in Marathon was another cool place.
