    Deer Corn IBC Tote

Picked up a 275 gallon IBC and was wondering how much corn will it hold.
One reference I saw claimed 8.33#/gallon which works out to 2290#. Does that sound about right?

8.33 ppg is the weight of water, corn would be lighter for the same volume.

Found a better reference. I think 6.02/lb is probably correct so at 275 your pretty close Jeff. 1,655 is what the math says. Thanks

I got 1650 based on our 55 gallon feeders hold 300 lbs. Sounds like your in the ball park.

I fill 2 totes every year for corn, I made a square hole about 20” to fill thru that has a cover. Depends on the size and weight of corn and how full you can get it. It will settle some after loading but I get around 1800 and 1950 was the most I remember.

Question! Has anyone used a tote for Corn? Will it flow out the valve? I'm wanting to try bulk corn in a tote without cutting on it. Might have to turn it over to get it out?

Can can get 7 bags in mine when completely empty. I’m sure the funnel has something to do with it.

I get corn from the Dakotas each year and have them shipped in totes. It'r right around 2K pounds a tote and I pay $80-100 each tote for them. I have done it several ways to access the corn. I have cut out a flap halfway on the top and kept it open by strapping a bungee cord and then "closed" it with a piece of wire wrapped around the frame. I have also used an elastic tarp used to go over palleted material and cut the entire top off and then just re-tarp it each time. We bought a guillotine type door/latch that we mounted on the lower side and set the tote on a platform but it would not pour out well. The only way I could think of doing that would be to mount it completely under it and then even then I don't think would work well because it's not funneled there. I always just scoop out with 5 gallon buckets with screw on lids.

it did not flow well out of the standard valve, had to keep bumping and agitating it. it was faster to use a shop vac to suck it out the top. but about time the tote was nearing empty, the shop vac burnt up from all the corn dust that was going through it.

I use a small auger for planting bulbs chucked up in a battery drill and can keep if flowing just fine.

About the 1:40 mark of this video you can see it working.

Anyone else doing this? I'm thinking about trying it...tired of dealing with the bags.

                              i'd guess 1750 based on a 55 gallon drum holding 350
