Hobby welding in a single sentence

Saw this somewhere else but it fits perfectly. Cracked me up and thought y’all might agree lol

There’s nothing I can’t build 10x better for 3x the cost of buying new.

And what is the end result? Not quite as good for 5x the cost? Or 10x as good for 10x the cost?

Once you buy about 8 grand worth of tools, and build some sort of shop, and build up a parts/material stockpile...you can get it down to about 2X the cost of new! Until you break a tool....

I build my own stuff because I enjoy designing things the way I want them, to do a job I have in mind, and executing the idea the way I want. If you don't love doing it, or have an original idea, there is no point doing it. The days of saving a bunch of money are all but gone.

Being able to fix your own stuff is a big bonus though.

I’m with you Dale, we do the same at my house.

Usually the way my projects end up.

I like doing my own as well. I like the challenge and getting to be creative. The end price is about the same factor as what we have in a pound of venison

I bought quite a few tools to include a welder, bandsaw and others to make a few items that would have cost me less than $600 to buy.

That can be very true, until the word "custom" come into play. Then it's often cheaper to do it your self (if you've already got the equipment) than to pay someone else to custom build it for ya.

Where you really recoup the funds are when you "Custom" build for other people.

I guess that's why I did it for a living instead of a hobby for so long. Its served me well over the years.

I’m more of a grinder than a welder personally.

Nowadays it’s more about finding someone that will do it the way I want it done when I want it done. Can be found, but in my experience, it ain’t cheap. May as well buy the tools and do it yourself.

Do more of your grinding before your welding, and you won’t need as much after.

ain't that the truth. I tell ya, how some of these people build things, you'd think they're trying to make money or something on them.
