    Anthrax

Over 150 deer dead from anthrax in Hardeman county. Ranchers are vaccinating the cattle.
    Zero opposition from the herds![emoji1787]

Had no idea anthrax was a problem in that part of Texas

For those who hunt in areas where anthrax is more common, what do y’all do? Is hunting this year a possibility? Do the anthrax spores die after a certain time period or after a frost?

My lease up there is primarily for my kids and I don’t want to potentially expose them to it.

From my understanding, the anthrax was confirmed in the NW part of the county along the Red River. They found dead cows and deer only a couple of miles from us.

You have a link to the info on the dead deer. Was up there this weekend and only heard of one confirmed cow and and a possible second cow but nothing on the deer.

I do not. That information was passed on from our club coordinator, whose source is likely the ranch owner. I can only assume at this time, maybe his source was the game warden, whom we all have a gentleman’s relationship.
I plan to head to the lease in Quanah tomorrow and will make some inquiries.

Thanks. Hope it is not as bad as it sounds. Enjoy your drive…..everything is so green you would think it is spring time.

I honestly thought this was a joke in regards to the vaccine. Is it confirmed anthrax? If so not good!

Man y’all are way out of the triangle out west! Did they confirm it was anthrax?

Hunting is possible but may not see much. The spores do not die. Typically anthrax shows up when you have a very wet spring followed by a hot summer. The spores are in the soil and will always be there.

Looking to confirm this weekend when I get there. There’s one case confirmed in bovine that is reported via media. I’ll give an update in a day or two.

Hunted a ranch in Spofford, near Brackettville. Every hunter, 5 of us, saw 20-25 deer every hunt. The ranch got anthrax and we'd see 4-5 apiece total for the next 2-3 years. Takes a while for the deer to come back.

its odd to have an anthrax outbreak in that area. on hwy 277 between Del Rio and Sonora it occurs naturally in the soil and only becomes an issue if we have a wet spring followed by a dry summer with no rain at all. it may not be reported due to property values with a confirmed case. the last 2 outbreaks i saw, there were deer on cameras on july 26 and by the 28 they were all dead and even the buzzards wouldn't tough them

The old timers say it's been around forever and is something they have to deal with..

You can call your local feed store and ask what the ranchers are saying in regards to it.

Last time this was brought up and I panicked, made an abrupt trip to the lease in Comstock to see deer everywhere, alive and healthy..never saw buzzards or found a carcass from anywhere I could get around our 4k acres.

It's always been there, I say don't get too alarmed over it but be aware of it...nothing you can do either way. You can feed the medicated protein pellets if your prefer but that wasn't an option for us.

With that said, I heard that some places around us were hit pretty hard and all around Rocksprings. It may not be worth the risk for some folks to even lease in these counties that area always seeing Anthrax.
