    Air Compressor experts needed

I have a 220 volt Campbell Hausfeld with a two cylinder pump. Yesterday as it was running it started to slow down and I have no clue as to why. Here is what I have checked so far.....

    1. Oil in compressor...in good shape and full

    2. run and start caps....both good

3 Voltage before it starts up and as it is slowing down.....no difference

    4. all wiring connections.......all tight and no signs of anything getting hot

In addition I have completely drained all the air out of the tank as well as tapped on the check valve to see if maybe it was stuck ( it could still be if it was I guess )

Power the compressor up and when it reaches about 15psi it starts to slow down big time.

Any ideas on what to check next?

Maybe a dumb question. belt tension

It is not slipping so not too loose, and I can push about an inch of slack so I don't think it is too tight.

Oh, I also checked the air intake and filter....all clear and no obstructions

Is it drawing more amps when it slows down?

If it is slowing down significantly due to friction etc in the pump, I would be surprised it didnt trip the breaker. I know it sounds redundant, but I would make extra sure the belt isnt slipping. It wont necessarily squeal

Pull the check valve off the tank and see if the compressor will run without slowing down.

Take the belt off and see if the compressor (or electric motor)is hard to turn. Either your motor is going bad or the pump is trying to lock up.

This^^^ Sounds like compressor piston is sticking inside cylinder.

Don't know, I don't have an amp clamp here

I checked again, no belt slippage

Did this and the compressor ran 90 to nothing, it was running so fast I didn't let it run long

With the check valve out I turned both by hand pretty easy, it is just a little harder to turn with the check valve installed. I decided not to take the belt off when I powered it up with out the check valve and it ran away. You think I still need to pull the belt and check? I mean I have everything else torn apart and it is only 4 bolts.

So here is the check valve, I can blow air thru it but not very easy, might run to tractor supply and see if they have one.

How did it turn out? I have had 2 check valves go bad on me but they leaked back to the gage rather than blocking flow, but can certainly see it happening

Don't know yet, still waiting on it to get here, had to order it.

Not making any noise, I assume?

I just had my larger 3 phase compressor at work give me fits, and I ended up removing one of the heads and found what looked like back flow valve had come apart. Repaired valve and reinstalled head and we are back to normal.

What started the search was the belt started making noise from the pump slowing down but electric motor maintained rpm.
