My great grandpa got shot and killed by two guys that were broke down out here in the middle of nowhere back in 1977. If it happened back then it can definitely happen now. If I don't know you/like you or if you ain't pretty and have some skimpy clothes on I'm blowing right on by. I wouldn't even ask for a ride from someone I don't know. Can't trust nobody.

The one time I was on foot during hot weather I was especially grateful for a guy who stopped to ask if I’d like a ride. The JD 4440 sprung a fuel leak while stacking round bales of hay. That time of day the temperature was easily around 100 and the shop was about a mile away down rough gravel and dirt roads. I walked back and picked up the parts and tools needed at the shop to fix the tractor and then came back on a four wheeler. The tractor wasn’t anywhere near the road. So after finishing up repairs I had to ride the four wheeler back across the hay pasture and then down the road in a different direction to another hay pasture. The reason was to hide the four wheeler behind a long line of round bales so nobody could see it from the road and steal it.
My clothes were dirty with grime and diesel fuel after fixing the fuel leak. Along comes a guy in a nice Jeep while I’m making the long walk back to the tractor. He pulls up and says get inside, you’re a long ways from the tractor. I told him my clothes were too dirty to do that but he insisted. Offered to pay him but he wouldn’t accept anything. It sucks to be that far out and have a breakdown on a tractor or any kind of vehicle for that matter. Sure appreciated that guy for helping me out on that hot summer day. The bottom of my feet were hurting from walking on the rough gravel.

I am pretty picky about who I pick up. I became weary of who I picked up after I gave a lady and here little daughter a ride when I was in high school. I was headed to school one cold rainy morning and saw a lady and her child hitchhiking so I pulled over. The lady and her daughter got in and she said she was going to the town our high school was in. In route she told me she was leaving her husband which made me start looking in the rear view mirror for an angry husband. I couldn't get her out of my truck fast enough when we got to town. I looked over my shoulder for a couple months after that.
I am not as likely to pick up someone since.
