I’ve searched and didn’t find a whole lot... so, new thread it is

Headed offshore this weekend and wanting to pickup my own setup big enough for YFT. Spinning is my first choice so I can cast and work baits when the time arises.

Any suggestions on gear? Would love a Saltiga but don’t go enough to justify a $1000 reel.

I’d be interested in something used if someone in the Houston area wants to clear some room.

Man a saltiga is nice i have a dogfight and its a beast.. Butt definitely not needed, id get a saragosa 20k put some 65 or 80lb on it. Hard reel to beat for the money

I agree with crabtrap. I just bought a saragossa 6500 for rooster fish in Mexico and it worked great. For the money they are good reels.

You can look at Cabo Series as well. If you look around you can find Van Stalls for about $500 when they are on sell. They will run a special for 3 reels for $1000 sometimes. Find a couple folks and get a very capable reel for $350. Rod is almost more important in my opinion.

Yeah I plan on hitting up FTU this afternoon. My initial focus was on a Penn Slammer III or IV, but that Saragosa 20k looks awesome as well.

Curious about rods too... I’m sure something in the $150 range would probably be sufficient.

Penn Slammer on a larger long running fish I would be scared of a smoked drag. The Cabo series is one if the only entry level reels Ive personally watched handle long runs on the drag system. That was just one YFT. I would look at a Gen 1 VS175 or 200. Im sure you can find one for $500 or less and it will serve you a lifetime

Rods for egg beaters are tough. Some of them have eyes that dont set up with particular reel and will promote wind knots. I dont think it has anything to do with price just how the eyes are spaced. I would spend the money on a reel and then pick up a Ugly Stick Tiger Lite in the 50-80# class and when you can go rod shopping. Use a short leader - 2-3 feet of flouro where your connection stay outside your last eye when casting. Connect with a low profile knot like a FG. Mono does not cast well on big spinners
