Therapy Dogs

I have a daughter with Down Syndrome and we are entertaining the idea of trying to get a therapy dog. Does anyone have any experience with this or can you share a contact with me that may? Going to do the normal google searches but thought I’d ask here knowing the wealth of experience/knowledge that this site has.

No experience but a good old pound puppy would probably work. Dogs are smart. The best ones I have ever had were from the pound or half starved strays that have showed up.

See the post ‘Rehoming Dog’ that I just made. We tried that and unfortunately it didn’t work out. And that’s not to say the next one wouldn’t. But trust me when I say I wanted it to. Having a daughter with special needs makes me a big fan of the so called ‘underdogs’!

Let the dog pick them, let them pick the dog. They know. The bond will be the biggest, most important factor. You might try getting in touch with pet partners, previously Delta Society. They are a therapy dog group. When I had my therapy dog, she was a Delta dog. She had the (Delta)papers that allowed her to go almost anywhere. Pet Partners can most likely put you in touch with someone local and reputable. When you find the right dog, it will work. Do not let Downs Syndrome get in the way of the dog or your daughter.
