What is this fruit…???

My cousin found these inside a mesquite bush and said they tasted sweet and resembled a persimmon. Medium size seeds. Very fleshy/juicy

Looks like balsam gourd but I didn't think they are edible. They grow on a spindly vine that climbs other trees

Jerp is right. Also known as Snake Apple. Deer like em but not recommended for human consumption.

We saw some this past weekend as well. Same deal....thorny vine growing up in a mesquite. I don't remember seeing them before, but my plant ID app said the same thing. Balsam gourd.
