    Lets talk muzzleloaders

After "A lot" of years I have dusted off my CVA Magbolt 50 cal. With a 1:28 twist It looks like there are lots of new bullets out there.

Before I shot Powerbelt Copper and triple seven powder.

Now it looks like there are lots of new bullets

    Powerbelt - Aerolite
    Powerbelt - EFR

    Federal - B.O.R. lock

    Spinjag

    Hornady - SST ML

    What do you guys use?

I have a .50 cal CVA that I’ve had about 15 years. I’ve shot Powerbelts and Triple seven powder the entire time. I’ve had really good results with that combo so I never tried anything else.

what bullet weight / powder weight do you shoot out of your CVA? It looks like I have 19 338 grain powerbelts to start with. mine is about 15 years old too.

Barnes TEZ 250gn and Blackhorn 209 powder. Sent one clean through a Buffalo through both lungs and out the opposite shoulder.

I’ll ask my cousin. He built this last for Oklahoma muzzle loader
                  season.

I shoot a 50 and everything depends on what state you are hunting in.

I see a lot of glass on top of those barrels. Must be nice.

We're in open sight and no compact powder territory.

Time to grow some hair and keep and eye for the bear in September.

I shoot 300 gr Buffalo lead with loose powder and open sights. By law.

I shoot the same combo in my CVA 50 cal.

Now in my Cabela 54 Hawken I like T7 and big honken round ball! That thing will group 1" @ 50 yards with iron sights. I love shooting that thing.

I tried out BH209 last year and was shooting sub 1” groups pretty easy with a .44 cal Speer deep curl soft point with the powder measured by weight(started doing this with Pyrodex Select a few years ago and it makes a big difference). Bullet is too hard for my liking on deer sized critters though and I’m switching to an XTP to get bigger wound channels/exit holes.

These are my last three black powder kills.

I shoot a 50 cal. T/C Encore that I’ve had for almost 20 yrs. 250gr shockwave, triple 7 loose powder. I also shoot a 45 cal knight extreme- super tight groups! 200 shockwave, 100 gr loose triple 7. I love t/c ‘a but those old knights are amazing.

no excuse 50 cal 460 grain 495 grain and 600 grain. i also cast lee real in 250 gr and 320 i love hornady great plains 385 and tc 370 gr maxiball ive got tons of all those, i dont use sabots with bullets except the Barns expander 250 grain they are a nasty looking hollow point. i own about 40 various muzzleloaders all sidelocks and 1 flintlock i own 1 inline which i never shoot i like the penetration of the big heavy lead full bore bullets and i rarely need or use more than 80 grains of 2F or 3F powder i find accuracy and power are good for anything i may want to hunt i shoot calibers from /32 to my Double pedersoli kodiak safari in .72 caliber those 500 grain roundballs and 800 to 1000 grain conicals are deadly with the conicals i use them to a max of 30 yards on big pigs as the barrel is a very slow twist with 710 size roundballs and .015 they are very effective, just added the extra as i love muzzleloaders i mainly own thompson center hawken and renegades lyman great plains hunter and deerstalker

I started about 25 years ago with a TC Thunderhawk. One of the first inlines made. I found out that that rifle like loose pyrodex RS with a 300gr Maxi hunter bullet. Killed a few deer with it. Then I bought a CVA Wolf. Inexpensive, but shoots great. That rifle likes 777 pellets and 295gr Power belt bullets. Smokepoles can be finicky with what they like to digest.
I use it for when I am up hunting up north. I like single shot rifles.
