Salvage to rebuilt title

My sons truck was in an accident and the insurance wants to total it. I can keep it and get a salvage title. What is required to make the truck street legal after it is repaired?

When I had a car totaled by my insurance company (uninsured motorist), I never had to change the title. I kept the car and drove it till it wouldn't drive anymore. Then sold it to a scrap dealer who wanted it for "the catalytic converter", that had already been replaced with an aftermarket one.

I had to have a form signed off on by a mechanic stating it was repaired and road worthy. The DMV did the rest.

I guess the shop that does the repairs would sign off.
