i know of a older man who drilled one in his back yard in a real fancy neighborhood in katy. all he used was 3" PVc pipe and some 2" thin wall metal pipe and a water hose!!
he got it to good water at about 45 ft. and it worked! no more city water bills.
if i wouldn't have seen it i would call BS, but he did it.
been thinking of trying it in my yard, but i think the water is too deep.

IN electra texas I saw post hole diggers with on extentable handle with a rope on the long handle used to drill shallow wells. The rope was used to work the jaws down hole. Easy to make but I'm sure it'd be a pain in the butt to use.

That would almost be worth splitting the cost with some neighbors and buying one of these things.......

Deep Rock is another DIY system that's been around for year. I have a 110' well on my place that the neighbor drilled with one before I bought him out.

Dug 2 of wells with a post hole digger like this one. http://www.amazon.com/Seymour-Mfg-AU...9666659&sr=1-2

One well was 22 foot deep and the other was 28 foot deep. You take the handle off of the top of the digger and add joints of 4 foot joints of 3/4" galvanized pipe threaded on both ends as you get deeper. Lot of work you have to pull the pipe and digger up every 4 or 5 inches. If you hit rock you need a breaking/wrecking bar to break through it.

The hard part is when you hit water, then you are digging in mud and the digger won't lift the dirt out as easy. We found that you can take a 1 1/4" plastic pipe and a heavy duty air compressor tape the air line to inside of the end you shove down the well hole. When you are down in the water/mud hit the air pressure, the air pressure will shoot out the mud and gravel in the hole. Than back with the auger and do it all over again. You need to get at least 5 feet into the water table, 10 foot is better.

40 feet of 3/4" galvanized pipe and the post hole digger weighs quite a bit. I used a scaffold to get one person on top and one at ground level to pull the rig out and lower it back in. Not sure if 2 people will be able to handle that much weight very often in a day. Especially when you hit water, that is when you need the speed to keep drilling so it doesn't cave in on you.
