    4runner transmission drain & fill - Easy?

2005 4runner - 1st year without a dipstick or tube. I'm getting a little slippage (engine revs between gears for a second or 2). Apparently a common cause for this is low ATF level - and of course I like the sound of that a lot better than transmission replacement.

I've read about 15 different threads about this and many get very complicated, mostly with checking fluid temperature and then trying to get the exact right amount of ATF back in.

Although a couple threads talk of a simple drain/fill. From what I've read, if I pull the transmission drain plug, 3.2 quarts should come out. If less than that comes out, ATF level was low. Either way, I just put 3.2 quarts back in. And there is an overflow plug that you're supposed to remove - when ATF Starts coming out there, you're full. Although, I guess when you think you're close to the right level, you need to drive it again to warm the fluid, then check level.

I'm a big fan of the KISS method for almost anything.

A few months ago I did the drain/refill (twice) on our Rogue-simply replaced what came out, same volume. The first time the fluid looked pretty dark, the second time, much less so - felt very good about the ATF after the 2nd time. The Rogue at least has a dipstick tube, so it wasn't hard to make a dipstick to verify fluid level.

Anyway, if 3.2 quarts is what is supposed to go in there (& I get something like that to come out) I'm going to be pretty good to just put that amount back in, right?

I'd probably plan on doing it 2-3 times since I know the real volume of ATF is something like 10-12 quarts, most of much doesn't come out when you pull the plug.

Joined a 4Runner forum, but apparently you can't actually post until you have enough replies - don't feel like playing that game.

Im fairly certain, at least on the Tundra transmission when you pull the over flow there is a specific temp the transmission has to be at to be accurate. Something like 99°-110°. Im a DIY guy myself but some things are just less hassle having serviced by someone to me.
