I looked for a decent price used Tacoma and couldn’t find one. So bought a stripped down 2021 with 4x4 for $26k. It gets 24 mpg or so with the stock tires. I only drive about 20k miles a year but didn’t want to add that many miles to my F350.

Yup, I drive an older Acura TSX to keep miles off my truck. Way better in traffic and much easier to park.

        This is very true.
I commute to work with my wife. My truck stays at the office and I drive it home if I need it for the weekend. So the commuter is a.k.a. wife’s car.
Very seldom does owning another vehicle just to keep miles off another one work out in your favor financially. Especially if you buy new.

Yup, 70 mile commute one way to work. I’ve got a Honda Accord I drive back and forth. My F250 ends up only getting used on the weekends and when I need to pull something. No regrets with it!

Just bought a jeep yesterday. We did not trade in any older vehicles becouse they now will be commuter cars. And the jeep will be our low mileage weekend vehicle.

A friend of mine has bought 3 work cars in 30 yrs.Just because of the dusty air,and wetting down the plant roads, constantly.Makes it hard to keep anything clean.Been considering this myself. He's never paid more than $1k for any of them, and his truck stays clean.

Thanks for all of the comments and advice. My wife and I talked about it quite a bit last night and think buying something used around $13k-$15k would make sense in our situation. Gas mileage isn't much of a factor as my company pays for all of my fuel expenses. We will probably look for a used mid to full sized car or small crossover... probably Toyota, Lexus, or something else known to last. My middle daughter turns 15 next month and is chomping at the bit to start driving. This would double as my commuter and the car for her to learn with for the next year before she gets her license. After she gets her license and shows to be a responsible driver, it would go to her, and then I would start the process over with my son who is about 14 months behind her. We would have the first car payed for before doing it again with my son. As bad as I want a boat right now, this is what we think is the right plan. It kind of solves two issues for us.

I bought my Altima almost 6 years ago and it has been a good car. It was 17k new and then I added an. Extended warranty. I have 170k on it and drive it over 100 miles a day. It has been worth it to me.

Commuter car is a 2006 Rav4 with 235k miles on it. 2019 F250 has 9k miles on it. I drive my truck when I am off and my work car back and forth to work. It's been worth it to me to keep the miles off my truck.

                      Commuter Cars?

I am about to start commuting in my wife’s 2014 chevy cruze, as we just got an suv for her to drive. Have a 2011 tundra with 83k on it and want to keep the mileage low. Not to mention, the cruze gets like 45 mpg.

I’d have a hard time making the math ever work on owning a second car if my employer covered my fuel expenses.

It's not about gas cost for me. It's ony about wear and tear and mileage accumulation my new truck. At the rate I'm going, I will have 100k miles on it in 2.5 years... 200k miles at 5 years. If I can save 40k miles from being put on my truck this year while providing a vehicle for my daughter to learn to drive on at the same time it will solve two issues for us. My wife and I both drive really nice vehicles and neither of us are excited about two teenage drivers learning to drive in them. This takes care of that. As much as new trucks cost, I want mine to last me a very long time. I'd rather wear out a $15k car for commuting to work rather than my truck.

Have a hard time paying $15000 for a second car while paying note on other. Break even just isn’t there.
