    generator output question

    Since I'm a shop teacher a fellow teacher brought in a generator and told me it doesn't work and I can have it if I wanted it. I cleaned out the fuel line and it runs like a top, first pull. I've never had a generator before and the 220 output on this stumps me. It's a Colman 6250/5000 genny. Why is the 220 circuit only 20 amps? Wouldn't it handle 30 based on 5000w? Pardon my ignorance and thanks for any thoughts.

    If you divide 5000 watts by 220 volts you get 22 amps so I would say it’s rated for 20 amps.

      Thanks, I was looking at the rule of thumb 150w=1A, therefore 30a=4500w. Why I asked. I see other 5000/6250 generators almost all have a 30A 220V outlets.

        That's at 120. 220 will be about 1/2

        P = I x V

        P= watts
        I= Amps
        V= voltage
