    who hunts victoria?

how is the hunting down there?
buddy and me will be looking at getting on a place that is hopefully family oriented and a long term lease starting 2022...
    any pros and cons?
trying to stay closer to houston with the young families now.... kinda hard to make that 5 hour drive on a weekend without making momma mad

Hunting can be good depending on location and neighbors. I hunt in Victoria County near the Jackson County line and the average mature deer we're seeing are between 130-140 with some up to 160. We dont have too much pressure around us so that helps

Plenty of hogs as well so you can keep busy with them too. Just remember Victoria County is Spring only for turkey season. Shoot me a PM if you have any other questions.

If any of ya'll have some lease openings let me know. Worked that area for a couple years and really would like to get on a place around there.

Pretty much what was stated above. Depending on location, ok deer numbers and tons of hogs.

If non-MLD, south of 59 used to have less restrictive regs on doe harvest.

I'd say the primary con for some is it being in the coastal region and dealing with what comes with that. Things like humidity, mosquitos and a fair amount of rain come to mind. We hunted a place not far from there for a few years and it was very wet and muddy about every other year.

I hunted there quite a bit in the 80's, was pretty good but I'm sure most of them are married and or larger now

Kidding, as stated above, it's more coastal than South Texas.

I hunted south of Victoria for a few years at McFaddin. Lots of deer and hogs. Decent quail and at times decent doves. It can be a muddy mess on wet years and the mosquitos can be really bad, so can the chiggars and the rattlesnakes. Depending on the property the area produces some nice deer. You'll hear about lots of 160+ deer down there but that isn't really how it was. I'd say average mature bucks were in the 130's to low 140's. I saw or got pics of a couple that would have likely broken 150". Once in awhile someone on one of the pastures around us would kill one in the 150's to 160s but it wasn't every year. Dukfvr's daughter killed one that was up in the 150's on that place. That was the best deer that was killed while I was on there. I killed a couple in the high 130's to low 140's with my bow and passed on some high 140s that I thought had potential but none of them ever did anything or else they crossed the railroad tracks and got smoked.

One thing that stands out about that area is that the rut is really early. In some ways that was a good thing. Aside from deer getting horns broken up so early in the season. The rut is pretty much done by Thanksgiving and then the deer settle back down and get much more predictable for the rest of the season. It just feels really strange to have the rut running full blast in October.

                      Glenn,
What property did you hunt in Mcfaddin?

I used to hunt across 77 on the Kainer under Mcfaddin Ranch. Good deer there.

I was pretty happy there, lots of nice deer by my standards. Sometimes folks say that area has tons of really huge deer and I didn't see that. Tons of just really nice, solid 10s and once in awhile it kicks out a better deer. It was a fun place to hunt and to me it was very archery friendly. I'd hunt there again under the right circumstances.

location will make a big difference. North 110-130 ish avg buck, South 115-140 ish avg bucks. Most areas have hogs, some will have turkey and as already noted if you have black gumbo "dirt" it can get sloppy in a hurry.
