Float & fish on the Brazos below PK - suggestions?

Some time in the next month or so I want to take my son on a canoe/fishing trip down the Brazos River below Possum Kingdom Lake. I know there are there are several operators that rent canoes and will drop you off/pick you up/bring you back to your truck. Anybody familiar with these outfits? I need suggestions on who to rent from and any other tips on that area. Just want to do a one-day float. Thanks!

Call first and set up a shuttle. I think the first strecth is 7 miles.
That first stretch below dam can be low at times. If your canoe is fiberglass , you might want to bring a small fiberglass repair kit.
Fly fish? NOt many big fish, my opine. Sure you can catch enough to make a dinner.
We caught a Walleye couple years ago on jig bumping bottome. Good tasting!

Not sure how to discribe this but in the lower half, second or third day, depending on how fast you float, there was a lot of hydria. Use some top water baits, the largemouth bass are holding in those pockets.
There is also carp in the river too. Wheaties, Big Red and trebble hook will / should get em or even use fresh bread. A big carp grilled on the half shell with Tony's , garlic and butter is very good.

Don't use rainbow trout for bait.

But they work so well! When do they stop stocking trout below the dam? There has been some good hog sign back along the river at times! I would love to thrash that road(16) on a ZX9R or any good liter bike!

Good advice! - It seems like every year or two you read about them busting somebody for using rainbows as bait to catch big stripers there. I guess it must work pretty well but I don't need a big striper quite that bad. I'm not expecting to fill the boat with fish. I just really enjoy a long float on the river. One of the things I things I like about that kind of fishing is you never know what you might catch. We'll be using light tackle - probably mix in a fly rod too. My dad and I use to fish smallmouth rivers in Mizzou and Arkansas -- any day in going down a river in a canoe is a good day.

My BIL is a fly fishing guide on the Brazos, although he prefers to catch big smallmouth below Whitney, he does go out of Rochelles with his airboat.

Or a remote control boat to get them closer to the dam.

We always did real well using rainbow trout colored 10" sluggos when fishing from the ban below the ****. We have pulled some very nice stripers from that water in the spring time.

Rochelles are good people. Used them at least ten times but it's been a few years. I don't know if p.k. is releasing at all right now but if they are you want to put in right before they release water. If you don't,and you are looking for a leisurely float down the river, you are in for a surprise. The last three or four times I've worked my butt off for 19 of the 20 mile trip from just below the dam back to Rochelles. The river continually winds from one direction to the next and I still havent figured out the physics behind how the wind is always in your face but it can make it a bit of a challenge. Pack as light as you can. Every pound counts in the shallows and just a few pounds will determine whether you are floating through them or walking and dragging the canoe. More undisturbed wildlife to be seen if you put in right at Rochelles and float to the pick up pt at 180 but the area below the d a m (silly profanity filter lol) is much more scenic and campsites are more abundant. Have fun. Need to do it again myself.
