    The poorly planned spring break...

My wife had surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago so we put spring break in a holding pattern. Finally decided Monday she was up for a little excursion as long as we didn’t have a long drive. After a little back and forth on where to go we settled on Carlsbad Caverns and made the 3 he hop skip over here today. Like an idiot I never checked the park’s site beyond a quick Google to confirm they were open. Figured masks and social distancing. Seems you have to have reservations and as you can imagine, no reservations are available tomorrow or Saturday. 🤦🏻*♂️

We are going to head to the park early and fingers crossed. Otherwise we are going to make the best of it and give our kids a story of parenting failure about that one time during the **** pandemic when mom and dad failed at vacation planning

Go to Guadalupe peak for a visit or hike. Beautiful spot and lots of mule deer. Not far

^^ What he suggested. You could go over the Guadalupes to Dog Canyon and do some hiking or just amazing sight seeing. Stay alert for barbary.

Stay alert for rattlesnakes. Biggest freaking rattlers I've ever seen are around Carlsbad.

Enjoy the excursions and glad to hear she feels good enough to get out. Life ain't a trip, it's a journey into the unknown........have a blast along the way!!![emoji817]

We've been watching for camping openings out there for months, and my wife is now 7 months pregnant. Maybe we can go in a year lol

Sorry for the luck. Life happens lol, all of us have been there at one point or another.

Camping is nearly impossible right now with everyone and their brother buying RV's and heading out of town this past year.
I have read a lot where this year is going to be even worse.
Good luck, make an adventure out of it and if you have to, find a place where you can boondock.

This is what led us to sell our RV this year... when we wanted to use it, we couldn’t find a place with openings. In this market, it sold in less than a week. OP- this will be a trip that will last in the memory books.... glad to see you can laugh a bit and enjoy it. Some of the best memories aren’t planned.

There’s White Sands NP within striking distance as well.

Go to the living desert zoo and gardens state park, also their is a massive play ground down by the river for the kids to run around on if they are still young enough for that. Also like mentioned run out to Guadalupe Peak but be warned it is a helluva hike up so probably out of her reach just after surgery. But McKittrick canyon is a pretty moderate hike, 4.5 miles round trip very little elevation gain probably take 3-4 hours round trip but once you get up to Pratt Cabin it is worth the hike, nice bench chairs etc outside to sit and relax the kids can run around and explore at the cabin and you will go from the rugged desert to a mountain oasis, nothing quite like it in Texas I don't think.

On the Pecos in Carlsbad they also do canoe and paddle boat rentals that can be fun to run up and down the river on. Couple decent places to eat in town as well. Also not a far run up to Roswell and go look at all the alien stuff think they have a museum or exhibit but I have never gone but the people watching in Roswell is fantastic lol

How old are the kids? Maybe you could have just driven up to the Palo Duro and told them it was the Grand Canyon.

Check out Queen Cafe an Campground out west of Carlsbad in the Guadalupe Mountains. Restaurant is back open 4-8pm on weekends, I believe, and I think they are having live music tomorrow. Used to be a handy little place to get gas and grab a bite to eat when we used to mule deer hunt out that way. Glad it has been reopened, even if it is just partially. Just past Queen is "The Rim".....I would definitely go check that out. Crazy how the forest/mountains just END right there and fall off straight down into desert floor.

I don't blame you. We camped three times last summer up here. Even trying to get a decent spot boon docking in the national forests was next to impossible. I put our truck camper back in the pole barn this last year in August it was so frustrating. I have seriously thought about selling ours because the market is so tight on them and then buying back in down the road but we have such a nice camper I also hate to sell it.

Have a feeling there are going to be some great deals on RV's here in a year or two...

Came to mention living desert zoo but see it has. Not bad for where it is.
