    Generator Question

    I have a 9k watt (7250 watt running) generator that I am hooking into two transfer switches. I had to install two because my pool equipment is on a sub panel.

    Both transfer switches are L14-30 male plugs. My generator has (1) L14-30 and (1) L5-30 plug. See right hand side of first image

    Is it better to plug into an Y adapter for both L14-30 cords (see image 3) or should I plug in one cord to the L14-30 outlet and get an adapter that allows me to plug into the L5-30 (see image 2)?

    I am not an electrician but just to get started. Dont you need two 240 feeds? Looks to me like the genny has only 1 240. Is your pool feed on a separate service or Does it feed from your house panel?

      I have a 60amp breaker in the main panel for the pool equipment that feeds the sub panel.

        I dont know all the ins and out of transfer switches so I am asking to learn. Wouldn't one transfer switch feed you main panel and in turn your pool?

          I really don't know either. I know that the transfer switches can handle 30 amps. The breaker for my pool equipment is dual pole 60amps, so I decided to run two independent switches.

          It may be overkill or un-needed, but i just do not want to run into the issues of not having power with the pool equipment again. That was no bueno.

            Sounds like your pool equipment requires more amps that your generator can supply?

              I thought that as well. That's why I put in the second transfer switch (to power the sub panel).

              The sub-panel consists of (2) dual pole 20amp circuits and (1) 15amp circuit.

                        Ok so just my learnings from running the house on mine. You only have one 240 output at 30 amps so only going to be able to feed one transfer switch at a time.

                        Also if you could feed 2 transfer switches I am not sure you would want 240 feeds going to one panel which what is happening since the sub feeds off the main.

                        Might be better to do away with the transfer switches and just install an interlock on your main and then manually turn breakers off and on.

                        BTW during a freeze you need to run all your pumps and I dont think that genny will have the watts to do that.

                          The L5-30 is only going to give you 120V/30A.

                          The L14-30 will give you 240V/30A.

                          The max you will ever get out of that generator is 240V/30A.

                          If you use the splitter you still are only going to get 240V/30A.

                          I’m still a little confused on what exactly you are trying to power up other than the pool.

                            I have a transfer switch to supply power to the pool sub-panel, and I have transfer switch to supply power to the main panel for the house.

                            I have some basic circuits (some lights and a couple outlets) is all I will run in the house.

                            I couldn't add an interlock switch because my main panel is full.

                              You cannot do both transfer switches at the same time. The generator has a orange line box around both of those 30 amp outlets but it means it is One 30 amp circuit.
                              You need two of them if you want both panels to work without tripping the breaker. You may need to find a generator with a single 100 amp outlet.

                              Your home probably has a 150 Amp main breaker. If you want a genny to run just like it, your need a generator around 14,000 to 16,000 watts which is twice the size you have now.

                              But if you just want to power one transfer panel at a time, your good.
