I’m saying if he wants to get a masters then an MBA is more useful and not so specific to one field. I tell people I mentor to only get one if it is a personal goal as when it comes time for promotion there is no check box to for that as a requirement, in the company I work for. Now if in the OP’s company, if a Masters gives him a leg up then he should do it. It sounds like its a personal goal and he is also being encouraged, so it sounds like he should do it. Each place is different.

I work a rotation out of the Country and one of my guys is working on his MBA online from his university in Ireland. So, it’s certainly doable if this guy who has 3 kids under 3 years old and works a crazy schedule can do it, it’s all about drive.

I can say coming from the guy that doesn't have the degree, get the degree. I'm 52 years old and I'm a mechanical designer at NASA, and I work for 25 year old dumb arses that have the degree. I've often thought of going back to school, but at 52 its just not worth it. My wife is in her masters program.
