4wd keeps me on the move when others are stuck. Today was a classic example of that.

On dry pavement it's a big no no, and you can break driveline components.
If you own a 4x4 it should be put in 4hi once week and driven for a few miles, as it keeps everything lubed and functioning.
Most manuals tell you this but few people do it.
Any straight stretch of road, anywhere, anytime will work, as long as you drive semi-straight.
My Tundra says I can switch in and out at 60mph, so I don't see any speed being a problem.
