I want gas or diesel option
I have CAT 8500 now but want bigger so I can run a/c and heat when power loss. 5 ton unit. 50 amp condensing unit, 50 amp air handler, 30 amp air handler.. then of course other essentials like fridge and some lights and outlets. Hot water heater and stove are gas so no real draw.
Start up amps on your compressor is what will get you. Look up start up amps and that will give you an idea on what size generator you need. Keeping enough gas or diesel fresh is going to be your biggest problem.

Just ordered a Generator from Bass Pro Shop with cover a little over $300 (On sale) with free shipping. It has enough power to satisfy most household needs if you manage power usage. I imagine a good licensed electrician can wire a household power supply to where all you do is start and plug. Plus it can be used for the average RV ... Deer Camp etc..

Has anyone looked at the new trucks with the Power Centers? I saw that there is an F150 that has a 7.2kw option. That would be plenty to power a house and seems convenient for hunting, camping, and RV use as well.

this is exactly what I do. I have a 5000W generator-it powers my lease "cabin on skegs". It'll power all the appliances , space heater or window unit A/C, TV all at the same time. I also big game hunt/flyfish out west and bird hunt the midwest. I'll use my generator to power my 6x12 "RV"cargo trailer which has A/C and heat unit on the roof along with a TV and appliances. I actually pulled my cargo trailer into my driveway when this winterstorm was rolling in as a plan "C". My wife told me you need to get that thing out of the driveway! I told her you'll thank me if our power goes out in the middle of the night!

Thanks Arrowsmith for the info and videos. I currently have a generator that I back fed into my dryer plug during this winter storm. After seeing this, I am concerned about the "dirty" power. How does that surge protector work that you posted a link to in your first post? I saw that it plugs into an outlet somewhere?

Being in Montana, I ordered a Cummins 9500 dual fuel for backup. My neighbor has told me she’s lost power 2x in 6 years, and then only a couple of hours. But my wife thinks it’s important.

Since storing gasoline is not what I want to do (it goes bad even with additives) I got dual fuel gas and propane. Plan is to get an RV size propane tank, I figure that should give me 20-24 hours.

Our electrician was great and wired a sub panel in the garage with lockout switch and a wall receptical next to the garage door. All ‘mission critical’ equipment is powered through the sub panel. Roll it outside, plug in cord, throw lockout.

The Cummins has a connection for 110v to an internal battery trickle charger.

One thing- while it’s derated from 7500w to 6750w on propane, the output is 30 amps max. It puts out 56 amps at 120v (6750/ 120), but only 30 amps is ‘useable’.

Cummins 9500 dual fuel (I need the $50 high altitude kit) $1,049

RV propane tank (full) about $100

25 foot, 10 gauge connecting cable with correct plugs on ends $120

I am looking into putting a tank holder strap on the frame, so it all moves as a unit. I’m not sure if the added weight is worth not moving the tank separately.

Our house heats from a 1,000 gallon buried propane tank. If I find outages exceed 24 hours, I may connect to the house power (not sure about a flex hose), or just buy 1-2 extra propane tanks.
