    Fishing during cruise..

No, I'm not talking about bringing an old penn reel and tub of danny kings to throw off the side at night..

But actually booking a fishing charter in one of the ports of call? Anyone ever done this? Which port?

We've got a cruise booked for August and want to play the cards like it isn't getting cancelled (which most likely it will).

Did this in Cozumel. We had a good time, didn’t catch a whole bunch but we drank an entire cooler of Sol beer and got to see some amazing coastline cruising in a pretty nice boat. Well worth the price of admission. We didn’t want to bottom fish so trolling just outside the reef is what we did.

I did in Cozumal many many years ago. Was supposed to be fly fishing the flats what the wind called for an audible. Ended up wade fishing a protected lagoon.

We went to Cozumel, probably six years ago. I think we went on a Carnival cruise. We went to Progresso, one other place, I don't remember, then to Cozumel. The second stop, we went and saw some Mayan ruins and a pyramid. It was definitely worth seeing. It was touristy stuff, I had enough cruise ship and touristy stuff, by the time we got to Cozumel.

So I really searched the menu over thoroughly, for excursions to sign up for once we got to Cozumel. On the last page, was a deep sea fishing trip. I thought what the hell, it's got to be better than another guided tour and I would be off of that **** ship.

So you got stand around this guy holding a sign saying something like deep sea fishing trip. While we were standing there, multiple guys walked by and looked at us, like mom, I want to go deep sea fishing. They looked very envious. I just stood there and smiled. I looked that whole menu over about five times, or at least the first 20 pages, then finally looked all the way to the last page and found the deep sea fishing trip. Man I was so happy I did.

So, eventually two wooden diesel engine boats, that look about like bay shrimp boats, without the out riggers showed up. They told us to jump on, and we took off. We went about half mile maybe a mile off the beach and went down to the end of the island and then started going in circles. On the trip down the beach, we saw more flying fish than I have ever seen in my life. We got into three schools of Dorado Dolphin. At one point we had four or five Dorados hooked up at once. I think we landed about five total on the boat I was on. We were only out there for three hours probably, maybe four. Then went back, got off at the dock, the two boats took off with our dorado dolphin. I was a bit POed about that, but figured we probably could not have gotten back into the country with them. But you can keep the same fish, when you catch them in the gulf, when they swim back up to the gulf. But that's our great government's wonderful thinking.

One thing the guys on the boats told us, when we were on our way back to the dock. Was that we needed to come back in the winter time. That during the winter, all of the big fish from all over come down there for the winter. They said the fishing is great down there during the winter. I want to go back some winter. As it was we caught more dorado dolphin than I have ever seen caught on one trip in my life.

Oh, as far as license, stuff like that. They don't care, you just show up, they take you out, give you beer, or sodas, Oreo cookies and chips, I think they also had breakfast tacos, but don't hold me to that. I am sure about the beer and Oreos.

So you get out there drive around in circles dragging four or five lines, trolling, when they drag through a school, it's on. The spot they chose at the west end of the island. There are three different currents that all meet up right off of that corner of the island. It makes for some funky waves and a large whirlpool. But man, that combination of currents all meeting up at that one point, seems to bring in the bait fish and the game fish.

If you are going on a cruise be sure to book thru their excursions.
You are better protected that way.

Just know if anything happens and you don't make it back by the departure time, the boat will leave you. Also, the DR is probably not the safest place to not do a cruise excursion. And you can't take anything you catch , back onto the boat.

X2. Make sure you book thru the cruise if not it's a long swim back.

My dad and I booked a float plane fly fishing trip out of Juneau when we did an Alaskan cruise. Was the highlight of the entire trip.
