Anyone ever put in a mini split A/C? I have a 1000 square foot lake cabin I want to put a mini split into and I was hoping to do it myself. I know Mr. Cool makes a DIY kit but I am curious about what is different about that kit vs a regular mini split.

But when you look at the “DIY” kits they claim no special tools are needed. Makes me wonder why they are different than the regular ones that aren’t “DIY.”

In hindsight I should have paid for the more expensive units. like the old adage buy once, cry once when trying to save money.

If that’s the case you can not change the length of the line set, cut it shorter or add to it. So you may have to coil some of it up somewhere behind the condenser, or in the attic. That could save you from having someone with a vacuum pump or having to buy one.

As an HVAC Tech my self, these DIY kits scare me. No warranty (that’s easily accessed), high risk of property damage if installed wrong, no way for the DIYer to know if the system is properly charged for their environment, and they’re usually pretty low on the efficiency ratings.

I've installed a couple of these now and they work wonderful. I just pay an AC tech to come out and pull the vacuum, release the refrigerant and check for leaks. So far they are are still running without issue. But they have gotten low enough in price if I can get at least 5 - 7 years out of a unit and one dies, they are cheap enough to replace and get a completely new system.
