They are robbing me without a gun as well. I pay $1,100 a month for minimum coverage (family of 6) and this past year with me being out of work, then under employed, I seriously thought about letting it go. It's a gamble either way though I hear horror stories about people not having coverage but I also hear about insurance companies refusing to pay...

My advice is look into the Christian co ops.

Obamacare did away with our decent self employed policy. We went several years self pay, now with Samaritans.

please excuse brevity and dictation errors.

My grand father did this. He had several thousand dollars in the bank as cushion for health care, he believed in paying cash for everything. He did not like the health insurance prices and the process. Had a stroke, required nursing home care. He was bankrupt inside of 2 months. **** near lost the property but we were able to save it.

Having kids and not having health insurance (and even life insurance) is irresponsible

My son was in the ICU for 6 days and we paid 30% of what it would have costed insurance. We paid around the $8,000 mark and our insurance was going to cost us $10,000 a year, so we still saved money.

We have Medishare now, but we only use it if it’s a considerable amount. If it’s something reasonable we still just cash pay due to the price advantage of it. Basically we have a emergency plan.

God forbid something bad would have happened while we were cash pay, a hospital will still accept $100 a month in the form of payment, if that’s all you can afford at the time. And that’s still cheaper than insurance.

I’m not sure how you equate 6 days to long term care.

$8k for six days. Imagine if you have a stroke tomorrow and need long term care for the next six months. $8k still sound realistic? Probably not

Nah. That's a broad brush you have there. I won't tell another man how to conduct his family's business and I dang sure ain't gona listen to another man tell me how to handle my affairs. I have a very good paying job, a very nice home, and more blessings than I can count and don't have a lick of insurance by choice. But I dang sure take care of my business and am anything but irresponsible I promise. I know lots of TBHers on here personally that will tell you the same.

You don’t insure your home or vehicles?

The cost is crazy high. But so can some of the expense if you pay out of pocket. I have been relativley healthy my entire life with several exceptions:
                      1. Appendix removed in 1996 for $35,000
                      2. Liver transplant to stay alive in 2014: $325,000 up front by insurance. Then meds and doctor visits for life. No idea what that would cost.

For the "BIG" issues it pays to have it. And at 61 years old, big issues can come more frequently. For the normal stuff paying cash with no insurance would be better.

Bottom line: Somebody has to pay for all the people getting it for free, and there are millions more in caravans headed our way.

Everyone is free to choose. I love freedom.

If you can afford it and the risks don't phase you, don't have insurance. I've known folks with $500,000 homes that are not insured. A single fire is a $500k loss. I had a liver transplant that would have been $300K out of pocket or die. That would have been the choice. I'm kind of glad I had insurance then.

I would say it is somewhat "irresonsible" to not have some way to take care of your family needs. If you have that covered, then good for you!

Is your insurance through your employer? Have you considered changing jobs to get lower priced coverage? $16k is steep
One thing I didn't see mentioned was what happens if you have health insurance and you have a health crisis? Are you still financially ruined?

If the plan is 80/20 does your 20% stop at some point? Will your insurance really step in to pay up everything?

IMO it's still a risk. And just imagine paying all those premiums and deductibles for decades and then still get "that's not covered" or your part is still 1mil or something.

I've been with Samaritan Ministries and several people I have referred to them are very happy. Basically, you take responsibility of your "everyday healthcare", like prescriptions and doctor visits but anything over $500 can be sent in for reimbursement. This is coming from the book of Acts of every Christian taking care of one another in their time of need.
I don't believe this for a second. I don't know of one single person that went BK for medical issue. I do know several who declared BK because they blew every dime on gambling or just whatever. I'm sure though many wait for a medical issue and then blame it on that...maybe.

But I think everyone would agree that the current system is broken and something big needs to be done. Anyone have a better plan than Medicare for all?

So many people seem to work in the “healthcare field” and from the outside their jobs seem completely unnecessary. The current healthcare system is so bloated and inefficient it’s ridiculous.
No. We don't need health care for all. If people don't want to work they shouldn't have it. Thinking health care is a right is plain bad and wrong.

My bro-in-law came down with cancer last May. Out of nowhere he had to be rushed to the hospital and within a couple days had to have emergency surgery to remove the cancer from his spine. This was just the beginning, but I'll jump to the end and sum what happened up. Went into hospital May 2020, pneumonia, four surgeries, and finally came home last Wednesday (8 months). He spent the entire time either in ICU or a regular hospital bed. My sister hasn't seen a bill yet but it's going to be crazy. They do have insurance.
I broke my back last January. 4 days in the hospital cost me my family deductible. I had some disc fused. My bill was over $200k.
I hate how much insurance costs these day. Completely crazy. That said, I'm not dropping it. Good luck with your decisions.
