Have you looked into Wyze cams? I have one inside the house to keep an eye on the dogs when we are gone. It even has a monitor that alerts you when the smoke detector goes off. Super cheap. $50 for a two pack on amazon. No subscription cost and lots of different features. The app is free and you can link as many cams as you want. You can buy an outdoor housing for $12 per camera. Checked amazon just now and looks like they have a few new models out as well. This is most likely your cheapest option and from my experience the cameras are very reliable.

Update - Just saw your post about contacts on windows and doors. Unfortunately you can't get that with Wyze

i've had ARLO for years .. and it has worked well for me. .. you can set it up with alert zones , and alert your phone .. wife broke her phone while i was at the ranch one weekend. .. i was able to see her car in the driveway , so i knew she was home , then when she went outside on the back porch to smoke , i turned on the 2 way audio and spoke to her ... it freaked her out at first .. but then she was glad we communicated ... good thing is you can put arlo anywhere , bad thing is you have to buy extra batteries and a decent charger to do rotations ... one of my cams i ran constant power as it's mounted on my garage ...

I was in a similar situation as you are now about 6 years ago. Was traveling a lot and wife and two daughters at home. We live in a good neighborhood, but they wanted to feel a little more secure while I was gone.

I had a security system installed for near nothing by Point Security(I think they are no longer in business, lol) and more added sensors since being installed. I also installed a basic 8 camera video system I got from Amazon. It came with 4 cameras and bought 4 more and the cables for about $300. Just recently upgraded the DVR to a 4K and a couple cameras to 1080p.

All this helped them feel more secure and still like having the cameras.

About a year ago I called the monitoring system to negotiate the monthly cost, cause it was getting to be near $60 a month. Told them I was going to SimplySafe for the $15 monthly. They said they would match it with no contract. There are several DIY alarm install systems out there, its just the monitoring company that can be the headache.

        Hope this helps.

I have installed several video systems, business and residential, I feel they are the best DVR and remote app viewing. And actually have US support.

Only buy theirs for my home.

We have been very happy with Simplisafe. I have the original system with door/window sensors, motion detectors, remote siren, panic button and key fobs. TBH, the key fobs stink. Maybe the newer ones are better, but the old ones weren't very "sturdy". That being said, everything else has been absolutely perfect. Long battery life on the sensor and they just work. The monitoring is rock solid and probably the cheapest in the industry. I would not hesitate recommending Simplisafe if you are okay with a very easy DIY install and setup.

We had a police officer speak at a neighborhood crime watch event

They stated the best defense is good exterior lighting. This was based on interviews with thiefs

If your house is lit up and not your neighbors, they go to the neighbors

We've had a couple of the more popular brands over the years, but contracts can be tough to get out of. We went with Simplisafe last year on our new house. Took me about 2 hours to install all sensors and set up.
So far no problems and as a testament the MIL went to get something from our house and forgot the code to turn it off.
In under a minute their dispatch was calling me to verify if all was good or if they needed to contact law enforcement.

                  This ^^^^

I have 12 lights around the house and garage with 2 street lights helping. These draw 13 watts and put out the same lighy as a 75 watt bulb.
                  We use Smith Thompson security.

Will simplisafe work without WiFi? Can it still operate but just not be monitored by the company?

                        Yes this is true

A sign stating "Beware of Dog" also deters as per police crime watch discussion

If they see it in your yard, criminals will go to neighbors or somewhere else
