You also need to understand that parks and wildlife are not managing this resource for the incredible experience that it is and could be for a long time. They would like to see every Sambar harvested off of the place and restore it to 100% native wildlife and costal prairie grassland.

Within a few more years the whole place will be shot out in terms of sambar

Man, I'm shocked to hear that, especially with the numbers we saw and passed.
On the last morning I even called the check station to let them know I had a very good stag(3by3) spotted, feeding out in the wide open along the shoreline, which would have made for any easy stalk and shot for someone who hasn't got an opportunity yet. He wasn't going anywhere and I could have got someone on him within minutes. I felt that, if I had been hunting hard and putting in for so long and desperate to see one, I'd have gratefully jumped at the opportunity if someone mentioned that. Wish I had met y'all and had your contact, I bet the biologist would have approved that.

I recall hearing "who drove the furthest for standby" but not "we'll give them the best unit". The unit I was in was the closest to the checkstation. I know units can make or break the hunt.

Did y'all sit in the permanent blinds and hunt?

I had a fairly detailed discussion with the biologist about that topic, number of sambar harvested to date, current population of sambar to date and the goals of the property. From that, I gathered that a reduction of sambar/exotics is the goal, but not eradication. If every hunter killed a sambar, for each hunt period, I believe it would take quite a few years before they are all "shot out", if thats even possible. I would however anticipate that mature stags(3x3) would be the rarest sightings, especially after learning that they don't typically become a 3x3 until after 6yrs of age. I was also shocked to hear they can live up to 28 years.

If this were true, why would they not list it as unlimited exotics? As I have read the applications, it seems to be only one sambar per hunter and one axis as well. If they were truly trying to eradicate the exotics, it would be unlimited as a lot of other locations are...
I'm not saying I disagree with them wanting to restore it back to it's native species and flora/Fauna. I'm just meaning you'd think if that were their goal, they'd put their money were there mouth is. With the current 1 limit on each exotic species, seems like they're trying to milk it while they can.

I plan to show up for the Standby for the YGDE(unless my daughter somehow draws it, only 2PP) category and maybe for the Exotic only category in late march to see if we can get a Sambar down. Sounds like it is a waning resource and the chances will be limited.

There used to be a couple that would walk out into the bay around the end of the high fence and up into POC to eat In peoples yards. I miss them along with the pheasants running around down there too.
