October= hunting season.
Might be cold and snowy or just nice and chilly.
Your lodging rates may be a little cheaper than middle of the summer. Some hotels have hunter's rates if you ask.
Early Oct may have elk still bugling up in the mountains.
Grizz will be active with any hunting seasons going on, watch for bears if you go hiking.

The vibe in town with the locals will be different than summer tourist season, somewhat anyway. Hunting seasons bring more regular type folks out .
