Because nothing says Feliz Año Nuevo like a good margarita on the rocks (rimmed with Tajín), I'm passing along a new tequila that was recommended to me when shopping tequilas at my local Twin Liquor earlier this week.
Qui Tequila--hecho en alguno parte de Mexico, not sure where exactly--addresses the dilemma, when making a fresh margarita, of having to choose between either a smooth taste or a "muddy" color. When making fresh margarita, I find blanco tequilas to be too harsh, yet their lack of color yields a visually pleasing margarita. However, when you step up to a reposado or ańejo, the flavor improves but the color is less than attractive.
Enter Qui Tequila, which is billed as a "platinum" añejo. A gentleman shopping the aisle next to me--a self-proclaimed tequila aficionado--who was very familiar with this tequila, highly recommended it as, he says, it's the only platinum ańejo that is triple distilled(?), hence the smooth flavor profile. It is one, he says, that he uses for sipping...it's that smooth.
I'm not much for sipping raw spirits neat, but I will say this...it's fantastic in fresh margaritas as it still packs a good "punch," as tequila should, while, at the same time, allowing the flavors of the other ingredients to come through.
Will do my best to post a pic below but I'm on my third Tajín-rimmed marg and as an old friend once told me, I don't do well when I mix ethyllyyl something-or-other (alcohol) and technology. But here goes...
