    Qui Tequila

Because nothing says Feliz Año Nuevo like a good margarita on the rocks (rimmed with Tajín), I'm passing along a new tequila that was recommended to me when shopping tequilas at my local Twin Liquor earlier this week.

Qui Tequila--hecho en alguno parte de Mexico, not sure where exactly--addresses the dilemma, when making a fresh margarita, of having to choose between either a smooth taste or a "muddy" color. When making fresh margarita, I find blanco tequilas to be too harsh, yet their lack of color yields a visually pleasing margarita. However, when you step up to a reposado or ańejo, the flavor improves but the color is less than attractive.

Enter Qui Tequila, which is billed as a "platinum" añejo. A gentleman shopping the aisle next to me--a self-proclaimed tequila aficionado--who was very familiar with this tequila, highly recommended it as, he says, it's the only platinum ańejo that is triple distilled(?), hence the smooth flavor profile. It is one, he says, that he uses for sipping...it's that smooth.

I'm not much for sipping raw spirits neat, but I will say this...it's fantastic in fresh margaritas as it still packs a good "punch," as tequila should, while, at the same time, allowing the flavors of the other ingredients to come through.

Will do my best to post a pic below but I'm on my third Tajín-rimmed marg and as an old friend once told me, I don't do well when I mix ethyllyyl something-or-other (alcohol) and technology. But here goes...

I've never been a tequila or margarita fan but my B.I.L. got me a big bottle of 1800 tequila and these.

            I loved them!

I’ve tried many different “off the shelf” margarita mixes, zing zang is the best in my opinion.

It’s interesting that you mention Código because I had a bottle of it in my hand (having seen a recommendation for it on this forum) when the gentleman recommended the Qui for my purposes instead. Next time, I may try the Código so I can compare and contrast. For what it’s worth, I think the Same Qui was $49.99/bottle, which may have been $10-15 less than the Código.

                  Either way...ouch!

They always carry the qui at the liquor store attached to my local Costco. Never bought it but always got a sample when they had them.

A pre-made margarita mix?!! Oh, gentlemen, that’s just all sorts of wrong!

What did you think? Did you like it compared to others you’ve tried?

I go fairly equal parts orange juice, lime juice and lemon juice, dash of agave syrup.

Mix?? There’s no “mix”! It’s just lime juice and sugar. Oh, sure, some mixes might add citric acid, but why do that?

Look, here’s the basic formula for a fresh margarita:

                              2 parts tequila
1 part orange liquor (i.e., Triple Sec, Cointreau, Grand Mariner, though my fave is Stirrings)
                              1 part fresh lime juice
And some kind of sweetener to taste (agave nectar, simple syrup, sugar, Sweet-n-low...)

With this basic recipe, the possibilities for flavored margs are endless:
-add sangria for what our neighborhood mixologist calls a “Pink Panty Pulldown”
-add a splash of orange juice to reduce the tanginess of the lime
-add a mango or peach purée for a festive poolside drink
-and did I mention sangria and pink panties?? There’s a story behind this one.

STOP the dependency on artificially colored, preservative-laden mixes. It’s just as easy—and far healthier—to use all fresh ingredients. Once you go fresh, you’ll never go back to a mix.

Tune in next week for my treatise on FROZEN margaritas...a far different animal than the fresh ones, but delicious in their own right as well.
