I struggled with his a while back with my 07 CTD. Finally figured it out. In short, my passenger side battery was being overcharged by the computer/regulator (can't remember the technical name). It was cooking the passenger side battery, bad sulfer smell, hot to the touch. The driver side battery was fine. Couple things it can be.... The computer/regulator thing is malfunctioning, the crossover cable is bad, or you have a bad connection/dirty terminals. Dirty terminals is a less likely scenario assuming you have cleaned everything real good. My issue ended up being a bad connection on the driver side positive terminal. Even though it looked tight, it wasn't getting a good connection which fooled the computer into thinking the passenger side battery wasn't getting enough charge. The computer cranked up the voltage to the passenger side and was overcharging the battery. I finally ended up using a stainless screw to give the driver side positive clamp more of a bite and I was able to crank it down real tight. That fixed everything. Use a volt meter to test the output at each battery. If the passenger side is showing low voltage output at the positive terminal, you aren't sharing power between the two batteries correctly and the computer will continue to overcharge the passenger side battery. In other words, you have a restriction somewhere between the two batteries or the computer is malfunctioning. Most of what I found when I was doing a bunch of research indicated its most commonly a restriction due to a bad connection at the terminals or a bad crossover cable. Be careful, it will overcharge it to the point that the battery will get so hot it will split and spew battery acid all over everything. If you get stuck somewhere with the passenger side battery overheating and being fried, you can disconnect the passenger side battery, zip tie the cables so they don't touch anything, and drive it home. That way you don't explode your passenger side battery. PM me if you need more guidance.

Also don’t overlook the sensor under the drivers side battery.

Yep, voltage regulator. Mine went out in my dodge. I would pull up to the plant parking lot to work every morning and thought "hmm, must be an H2S release." Then it was happening every day. Finally some scaffold builders that parked next to me said your truck smells like rotten eggs lol!
