They can live a really long time when you poke a razor sharp hole right through the stomach. You’re better off with a big nasty mechanical broadhead on a shot like this. Make a hole big enough hole where stomach matter is actually falling on the ground. You gotta leave them long enough too, or you’ll bump them off you’re property....

Maybe try hunting the same spot in the next few days. Sometimes they return to the feeder even injured.
          Good luck!

The good thing is there really isn’t anywhere for him to go. He won’t leave the property as it is surrounded by neighborhoods. You made my point on the broadhead. I have seen 2 inch cut mechanicals hit the same spot and open up a huge wound. I’ve also seen them hit bone and barely penetrate. I wanted him shooting the fixed blade to make sure we got a pass thru. It was just a bad shot.

Gonna watch the camera tomorrow and make sure he doesn’t show back up then we will go look again. Crazy things happen and this buck seems to have nine lives.

Sorry to hear this! I'm sure y'all will find him in the coming days though. Crap happens sometimes though-it's hunting

That deer is dead by now probably or will be by morning. How many acres is the area he can’t leave?

He’s not going to show back up. He’s dead somewhere.

Good luck with the search Mike. Looks like Kendall county paid off well for y'all this year. I remember the post of the stud you killed out there earlier this season.

You’d be surprised the little wood lots and chunks of brush a buck uses to bed if the area is largely undisturbed. It can be right next to a highway or by a residential area, if it’s a little undisturbed area. I hope you find him. I strongly believe in a big mechanical like NAP spitfire MAXX and try to stay away from bone. Not a RAGE fan. The old Vortex Broadheads are great. I’ve seen deer completely disemboweled by a Vortex broadhead. It’s stomach was literally laying on the ground detached from the deer when we started the trail. With all the energy from the modern compounds why use a small fixed head and bury your arrow 8 inches in the dirt. Put that energy into cutting and doing the most damage to the deer, and you have the insurance when you need it.
