Looks like we lost this one. Dogs were on the trail for 200 yards then lost it and started circling. We restarted them four times at the feeder and they went the same way each time. We looked for 3 hours.. It just sealed up and left nothing on the ground. Really stinks. Would have been an awesome Christmas present for Cole. That buck is a mid 30’s deer which is rare for low fence around here. I love this sport and sometimes it can be heartbreaking. He is in there somewhere and i will look everyday until i find him. Merry Christmas brothers!

Check the nearest water in the coming days. The deer is dead or dying somewhere. Gut shot deer go to water almost 100% of the time if not pushed

That's what hunting is all about. Sometimes you are going to lose some, hope you find him later and tell your son that there is always a tomorrow to redeem himself.

Have you considered getting a fresh dog? Back when I had dogs this would be a 100 percent recovery. I know it's been stomped but I would swing my dog around down wind a couple hundred yds. He is dead or dying. Hate to see you lose him.

Gut shot deer are easy for the dogs most of the time. I would consider another dog.

What they said^ not to knock your neighbors dog but a good one should be able to find that deer.

They would have stayed on him. Same two dogs have bayed lots of deer for us in the past. It was a really weird deal and frustrating. Most guys don’t want to put their dogs out on 125 acres surrounded by neighborhoods.

This. I gut shot my buck just before dark, lost trail, and found him in the middle of our pond the next morning. He made a 250 yard circle and ended up less than 100 yards from where he was shot. Good luck.
