    Public hunting

General question, for those that hunt public land. How long do you all sit out before calling it a day? I get out about 6am, and call it quits at 1pm, the last two times I’ve gone out there have been others hunters who get there when I do but are always gone when I get back. Either they got one or are just leaving.

If I hunted public I might be moving all day looking for sign

I get out about 11am. Most folks around me tend to leave around 9:30 or 10am. I worry more about being seen leaving a hunting spot and someone finding it

On average I try to be in the stand 30 minutes before shoot time and sit until 10:30 or 11. If it’s been an hour since I’ve seen anything by then I’m gone. If there’s animals still moving through I stay longer.

With public land, I usually sit for around 2 hours after the sun comes up, then I start walking trying to jump some deer. If one spot isn't showing me anything, I move to the next one. Sometimes I will spend an entire day walking public lands and have jumped a bunch of deer after everyone has already left.

            I typically hunt all day.
I can’t tell you how many times I get deer movement at that 11:00-13:00 time frame from other hunters leaving/entering. Also, I typically get more mid day movements from bucks during the rut than morning/evening.

Dawn till dusk during gun season. You can’t kill them from the couch. Mid day can almost be better than the mornings and evenings sometimes with all the other hunters moving deer around when they’re heading to amd from the truck.

For me, depends on time of season (early, pre rut, rut, and late season).

All day pack lunch like trail mix and oranges etc
Leave at dark and come back at dark

That’s a day to day deal. Prior to any rut activity at all I try to minimize my time in the stand as much as possible. I’ll usually sit 2 hours in the morning, 2 hours in the evening. Once the cruising scene gets going I’ll be there dark to dark when the temps and wind direction allow it. Late season. I go back to the 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening.

I will be out this evening on a standing bean field.

I've always played it by ear. Hunting is recreation and i like to eat/nap midday but if i felt like i was in a awesome spot i would try to hunt all day.

I think it really depends on the area. I’ve ran trail cameras on public quite a bit and I’ve never had a pic of a deer between 10 am and 3 pm. I’m usually and done with the morning hunt by 10:30. Then I’ll scout mid day and be back in a tree by 3 ish pm
