    Duck scouting question

I’ve been duck hunting a while, but this is the first year I’ve gotten serious about scouting beforehand. For a long time I had a few spots I would go to because they were convenient, with a lot of skunks as a result.

So, dumb question incoming. I haven’t seen any birds on the public lakes I’ve scoped out this week. On one, several farm ponds close to it held a lot of birds. This trip was in the middle of the afternoon on a sunny, warm, calm day. I’m wondering if the birds are feeding and loafing on those ponds all day and roosting on the lake. Is it worth hunting that lake or should I keep looking to find them on a lake itself?

Keep looking. Typically the later in the season, the more they move to small water.

      Find the food!!

Flooded rice field, old corn field, etc. you will find the birds.

I like to scout the hours I hunt, or close to it. See what the birds are doing at that time.

We do all of our hunting on farm ponds. We run trail cameras on them and when the phone starts going off we know we have birds. MOST of the time, if their were birds on the pond today, they will be there tomorrow also. In our area, the birds hit the ponds right at shooting light and will sit there and feed all day if you leave them alone. All of our ponds are surrounded by oaks and they feed on the acorns falling in the water. 99% of what we shoot are mallards....this is Red River County.
