    Gun safety.......

The thread about the gun shot hand and an incident that happened just yesterday down the street from my house got me to thinkin. How many of y'all keep your guns loaded at all times? I do and I was raised around guns that were loaded at all times. I do it because unloaded guns make me nervous. I believe way more people have been maimed or killed by a gun they believed was unloaded than ones they knew were loaded. That's just a guess but I think if there was a study to show the statistics I'd be correct. That's just my personal choice, grill me if you want but I never pick up a gun that's not capable of shooting a hole in me or something else. I don't make a habit of pointing them at myself or anything I'm not ready to destroy either. I know what they can do and it's not something I want to happen to me or anything or anyone else.

Unlike the people down the street. They blew a window out of their house and the bullet hit a parked car in their driveway. That happened next door to little kids that are always outside playing. My sister is always over there playing with her friends. It could have been a lot worse than it was. All it boils down to is pay attention to what you're doing. Guns ain't a joke, they're not toys you can jack around with. One dumb mistake and you could end someone's life. If it happens to you that's on you. I view that the same way I do drunk driving. If you hurt yourself oh well. But don't endanger other people just because you're making a bad choice. Assume every gun you pick up is loaded. At my house you have to assume it. Because they are and they'll kill ya if you shoot it at yourself.

Just go to a public shooting range and watch folks handle their weapons.

I was trained and train the kiddos... all weapons inside of house and vehicle (not actively hunting) should be condition 4. I EDC condition 3. The only exception is the wifes hammerless kept secured at condition 2.

Condition 1 is on the range or in the woods... only.

Trick question? Every gun is always loaded and treated as such

My buddy, the biggest advocate for unloaded guns you'll ever meet has had two negligent discharges in his life. Shot a .270 in his dad's truck and a .50cal muzzleloader in his living room. Which I thought was hilarious at the time, actually still is. But still.......thinking guns aren't loaded is a bad habit to get into.

If you get into that mindset that this gun ain't loaded what happens when it is? You end up on the floor because that gun just kicked the crap out of you and you're in a smoke filled room and you need a new front door......hypothetically speaking.LOL I bet that muzzleloader ordeal was smoky and noisy.

An unloaded gun is of no use, should you need it.
Mine are always loaded, and treated as such, just as OP stated.
Treating any gun as unloaded (unless you personally verify it), is asking for trouble.

OP, I was brought up this way also, at least in deer camp. The school of thought in that bunch of men was that there was more danger in loading and unloading rifles and in not knowing which rifles were loaded or unloaded. When in camp, all rifles were left loaded and placed inside the camp on gun rack inside the door. No exception, no leaning against a tree or in corner, etc. Safties were checked often. When not in the rack, muzzles were always pointed in a safe direction and everyone policed this. No accidents or stray rounds ever.

^^^ This. Even in the safe the hand guns are loaded with a round in the chamber. Rifles and shotguns are not.

I also think that guns should not be made as a taboo thing in a person's household if they have children. My grandpa would get home and lay his pistol on the table and it would stay there until he was ready to go somewhere. He still does the same thing this very day. Guns were normal to me so neither my brother or myself ever picked them up and messed with them. We got to shoot guns with grandpa so they weren't something that we were curious about. They were there, we knew they were there but we saw them all the time so it wasn't any different than seeing a welder out in grandpas shed. They're tools that need to be respected not feared.

Lock them away of course but don't make them something your kids can't see. I'll even say it does them some good to see what a gun will do. Take them out shootin so they can see that they're not just pieces of metal that make noise.

Growing up, we kids were more terrified of the butt whipping we were gonna get if we touched dad’s guns.
We probably would have survived the shot.

I still remember what my grandpa said to me after I had just completely destroyed a Dr. Pepper can with my 20 gauge.

"You see what that can looks like? It'll do the same thing to a person."

That was nearly 20 years ago. He didn't tell me that to scare me. He told me so I'd never forget it. It worked.

Any guns in storage I keep unloaded.
Personal defense weapons are always loaded.
All firearms, regardless of where they have been or their purpose, are treated as loaded at all times, no exceptions.

Those are all your choices but some of those can get you killed.

My home defense weapons are all condition 1. My EDC is definitely condition 1 (hypothetically speaking because I don’t carry guns with thumb safeties) many of the guns in my safe are condition 3 or 2 depending on their purpose.

Very few are kept completely unloaded with the possible exception of some of my hunting rifles.
