    Log Splitter question

I want to get one. I think electric would be better for my use since it will be seasonal. Split Oak and Mesquite would the 2 main I would use it for. Any suggestions from the pros out there? I have never had one, well other than an axe and I am not doing that anymore

I have an electric splitter and it is very limited in what it can split, wood and size wise. Have a buddy who has a gas 18 ton at his ranch and that feels like it could split a redwood.

I just cant afford one of the larger ones.

Gas or hydraulic if you have a tractor with hookups.

Definitely a good sized gas one if you will be splitting oak.

It will be used at my house in a neighborhood. I do have tractors and such at ranch but I have not really put effort into firewood before. We just moved into a home with fireplace and I got a truck full of seasoned Oak yesterday for 25.00
The electric ones do not work very well?

Unless you need to split a lot of wood, this is a very good alternative you might want to consider. It's a good compromise between gas/pto model and an electric model. Actually works very well.

Last time I got a load of wood, I rented a splitter from Home depot. Cost $65, and split 1/2 cord in an hour.

I too would like to own one, but no more than I would use it, much cheaper to rent a couple times a year.

If’n you must buy, go gas,,, and no smaller than 18 ton.

Rent one and try...if you buy consider using ethanol free gas esp last tank before long storage and let it run dry..I do last statement in all my Carburetor small motors.. and they all start next spring without a carb rebuild...jm2c

I built an 5hp electric/hydraulic log splitter about 25 years ago. It would split anything you could put in it. The good thing with the electric models are they are much quieter and run when you turn the switch. Reminds me a BIL borrowed it years ago and never returned it.

If just splitting wood for a seasonal fireplace I would look into renting one for a day. Home Depot has them. You can get a lot done for a little money and zero upkeep and don’t have to worry about storing it. Maybe go in with someone that wants some wood split too. Just my $.02

We have had a harbor freight electric one for a couple years. It’s been great for what it is. We don’t run big stuff in it, and we have always kept logs 10-14” long. That’s just how we like our wood anyways...

If your wanting to split 18” long seasoned live oak trunks, well look elsewhere!

Get one of these. I can knock down a 100 foot pine, de-limb It, cut It up, and then split It in a little over an hour by myself. Best piece of equipment the lodge has. If you aren’t going to use It a lot, just rent one for a weekend.

We have a 26 ton gas and would not trade it. To me, it is kind of like 4x4. You don't need it all the time, but when you do, you are glad that you have it. JMO

I bit the bullet about 5 years ago, went with a gas from tractor supply. I split wood during the summer to allow for it to dry enough for winter. We have a lot of fires and when we go camping we load up a bunch. Never used an electric but with some of the oak and mesquite we split I can't imagine an electric one would work out very well. JMO
