Combination of the deer moving at the sound of the bow, yes they can hear that before the arrow gets to them, and maybe the flopper not opening, hence the small exit wound resulting in a quatering toward you hit.

The eyes tell us a lot of things are perfect in the heat of the moment when they aren't....and some deer can do the matrix jumping the string. . It's probably a combination of them both.

Here’s an example of what happened. You thought you saw something but really something else occurred. It can happen even on video where you can rewind.

Not only arrows, but I have seen some boolets take some mighty strange paths over the years.
