    Enforcing Javelina bag limits...

I used to not hunt them unless I could find someone who wanted the meat. I have also never killed more than 2 in any license year. Honesty is something that is dying out in today’s society!!!!! After being shown how good javelina tamales are, I will keep every one I shoot, but I will still only shoot 2 per year unless they change the law! And they are Gods gift to a stalking bowhunter!

They are cool critters, and as said above I also don't want them shot out. Where we're at there are literally hundreds, we kill 40 to 50 a year always thinking we've worked them over a touch for the next year...... WRONG!

We dont have a ton on your place but certain parts of the ranch do. We don't mess with them too much. I've got one big one shoulder mounted and it's a cool addition.

I’ve only killed one and that was about 5 years ago. Donated the meat to a neighbor.

Well, look at limits on ducks and geese. Say the limit on ducks is 6, and the possession limit is twice the daily limit. By law I think you can only have 12 ducks in your freezer. Most duck hunters will have a lot more than 12 in their freezer. Just don't have more than 2 Jav's in your truck at once.

            Possession limit (hunters)
The maximum number of any animal or bird that may be possessed by any person at any place. This limit only ceases when a bird or animal is legally finally processed or reaches its final destination. Final processing may only occur at final destination or cold storage facility.

I believe that the possession limit means how many you can possess before you get to your final destination, like your home. I don’t think there is no limit to how many you could have in your house.

We had a huge explosion from last year...it's probably one of the most bizarre rules to be state wide.

We had never seen them in the 20+ years we have been on our place...until we saw a couple on trail cameras before Thanksgiving. Then last week my son shot 1 of the 2 we had been seeing thinking it was a hog. When we went back to that stand that afternoon to swap out memory cards there were 4 at the feeder. They really do multiply lol.

We haven't figured out if they are passing thru or we have a problem. Either way, I'm going to try to stalk one with my bow this weekend. We really aren't that interested in having them around. I did drop off 4 on Sunday (frozen from previous youth hunts) to a lady to make us some tamales. I guess if they are good we may be more interested in having them around.

My thinking on the 2 javelina per year honor system, is based on the fact that there’s not a big demand or a lot of hunters that target them. I posted this on another thread earlier, but we killed some during bow season. I fried some javelina and deer back strap, everyone thought the javelina better. To those thinking they will take over like wild hogs, that hasn’t been the case on our place. We’ve had the same ranch for around 20yrs on the rio grande, in what I would imagine would be prime javelina habitat. Some years they are plentiful, some years we just see a few.

They are a fun spot and stalk bow hunt, and they eat well too! I make pulled pork in the crock pot with them.

I always try to get me 2 sows every year. The meat is MUCH better than deer meat!! I've proved it so, so many times with doubters, both at the ranch and at my home with blind taste tests... Now I haven't figured out how to get the stank off the boars, so I try not to shot 'em... When we had our place on the Rio Grande, we had a guy that worked for us that lived in Del Rio. We'd take them to him (where I took any boar) and he'd make tamales with them... When he'd bring some out to the ranch for us to eat, they were fantastic!!

For anyone interested in trying to process one and eat it, just hang it up (I do by the head unless it is to be mounted) and skin it like you would a deer. keep you hands off the meat. Do not mess with that nasty gland on their back up a ways from the tail. As you skin, it will come off with the hide. It does not go into the flesh at all. Once skinned, wash your hands/change gloves. Wash your knife before taking the carcass apart. What I do is use a 2 gallon ziploc bag and debone it completely while it's hanging. There is no requirement that the quarters be maintained for a javelina like a deer or antelope in Texas... A grown javelina will fit into a 2 gallon ziploc bag and every bite of the meat is delicious!!

And the reason it is possible to reasonably control them as opposed to feral hogs is that javelina only have 1 or 2 babies per litter, not 8-10 or more like a hog. They will have 2 breeding cycles (at any time of year) per year though, so just take a portion out of the population regularly and you should be able to keep them managed pretty well...

                                TWO:
In Texas, the javelina is classified as a game animal and may be legally harvested with a hunting license, during hunting season, in counties which have a season. The typical bag limit is two animals per year. Feral hogs often share the same habitat as the javelina, so it’s not unusual to find a combination hunt for both.

                                Javelina Bag Limits

                                Two per license year.
