I'm not trying to stir the pot any but if the officer would have found drugs in the car everyone would be singing his praises for his persistence. Am I right?

Okay, so we don't know the whole story here, but why has this become such news? Because the "victim" is an NFL player. If it happened to you or me, nobody would be the wiser. Additionally, I do understand that there were extenuating circumstances, HOWEVER, that does not give you the right to run red lights, flee from police officers, etc. There probably was some "contempt of cop" mentality going on in the officer's mind, but regardless, the driver ran a red light (which is an arrestable offense under the Texas Traffic Code), plus he failed to stop when directed by the officer, which is a felony. What would have been the case if the mother in law had died in her home, and EMS found her deceased, called him to come to the home and he was racing like that? I agree there should have been more compassion on the part of the officer, but when people jump out of their vehicle and defy orders to stop, the officer has to go into self preservation/survival mode because most often when people defy orders and jump out of a car after pursuits, there is a fight coming shortly there after.

Ya.....it's sad.
But.....
We complain that LEO's dont do their job.
Now....we are complaining because he was doing his job?
How many times do you think he has been lied too? He just cant let someone that broke the law walk away!
Just an unfortunate occurance. That's all.Ultramatic Feeders
We're paratroopers, Lieutenant. We're supposed to be surrounded......

When I was in the academy I remember instructor relating a similar story. He had stopped an elderly man running a stop sign, he slowed but didn't stop. The driver relates his dog is dying and he's trying to get to the vet. The officer tells him to be careful, and sends him on his way. Well the officer pulls out behind him, and the guy proceeds to run several intersections before pulling up at the vet. Officer let him get his dog inside, then asked him to come outside. He gave him around 6 tickets. That old man was happy to get them. Now if that old man hit someone that officer could have face charges for not detaining him. Its the opposite side of the story.

There must have been more diplomatic and gentlemenly ways to handle this. Why not just follow the dude into the hospital, wait until he had a few minutes with his family and then continue the discussion. Maybe that wouldn't have worked. There are others.
I mean acting all hostile because these people would not get back in the car, is just bad judgment. Now if they had pulled up to a bar, that's one thing. But these people had pulled up to a hospital. Any reasonable person could deduct that the is some kind of emergency going on. I could see at least a handle full of things going on in that hospital in which I would have done the exact same thing, execpt if I was the man I would have said that I was going in there, we can talk later or you can shoot me in the back while going into the hospital.

Both stories show the lack of common sense in this world.
Once a nurse comes down and says a family members is dying. Its confirmation he's telling the truth. He could have gone to the room with him and ticked him while he waited outside the room.
My 2 cents.

With all due respect to LEOs and their thankless job at times, I agree with the above. Simple deduction and ability to rationalize would have made for a better evening.
