I carry critical defense in my carry pistol, and I carry it 24/7. It sees its share of finishing shots while thermal hunting at night. Usually 2-4 hogs per night a couple times a week. Cant say that I recall ever needing more than one shot as long as I placed it behind the ear.

Speaking of using a .22 in a trap.... Wasn't there a video posted on here where a piglet was shot, got rigid a fell over legs sticking up in the air...

FMJ's would be my last choice for shooting anything alive unless I have to. In this case I'd make an exception. They'll be wounded and you'll be close enough to hit them right where you need to. Plus there's not a whole plethora of choices to choose from right now. So I'd go with whatever is cheapest for that application.

My theory for carrying FMJ was through straight bone up close and personal, tracking a pig you have discovered is wounded and not dead in the dark or even the light .....and it decides it might come your way. You’re not worried about expansion. You’re worried about penetration into the light switch. Like I said, I asked some of what I might would refer to as TBH gun gurus or gun nuts and both their immediate answers confirmed that thought. FMJ or the flat hard cast bullets mentioned above versus hollow points were their recommendations for my scenario. I’m going to stick with that.Last edited by Smart; 11-21-2020, 06:27 AM.

While I don’t buy into all of the stories of bullets bouncing or grazing off the skull of a pig, given being in a situation like Smart posed hard cast would always be my first choice for many reasons. If cost wasn’t a concern I’d also feel very confident in the solid copper CNC machined bullets like the Lehigh extreme penetrators. FMJ would be my next choice and hollow points the last choice.
