Ok. How are y’all getting the gristle off the back of the skull? I’ve tried brushes, dull knives, sticks, tried to hose it. Don’t have access to a pressure washer. Does it just need more time in the water?

You know it's a tough call. I love my pressure washer.
Did you already bust off the nodules by the ear canals? It's like a round boney ball.
Instead of boiling it you could try putting it in black bag with a little water in the sun, for like a week. I do the at to "sweat" the horns of a ram or aoudad. Really you are trying to get the tissue to rot off. It will smell but you can bleach the skull and it will kill the smell.
Alternatively you could let it dry 100% then use dremel tool to grind it off

Skull Bleaching Kit
Sold per Kit
Van Dykes taxidermy
$36.00
Here is an economical way to bleach out (whiten) any size skull up to and including Elk. This skull bleaching kit contains everything you need in order to safely and quickly boil the skull and then bleach it using 40 volume Hydrogen Peroxide and a powered bleaching agent. The kit contains latex gloves, mixing sticks, sodium carbonate and complete instructions. Contains enough material for approximately three deer skulls.
I also use a dremel tool with wire brush to help remove the small pieces of meat.
